Advantages to Community Garden

When comparing with private gardening or balcony gardening, community garden has number of advantages. Community garden are for those who live in apartment building without a balcony or access to green space, locations completely shaded by large trees, or the soil in the yard is not hospitable to growing edible plants.

Community garden helps beginners to meet experts and learn more about gardening by working with them. Many community gardens are equipped with garden tools such as shovels, rake, wheelbarrows, buckets and watering cans, all of which are available for members of the garden to use. Gardeners can bring extra seeds from their collection for trading with other gardeners. Compost is easy to generate and maintain when many gardeners are contributing to the pile.

Starting a community garden

There are many ways to start a community garden. It is recommended to organize a meeting of interested people in your neighborhood, apartment complex or friends, family, gardening and horticultural societies etc. Following steps can be adopted to organize or start a community garden in your neighborhood.

  • Planning Committee: The secret of success in community garden is involvement of one and all members associated with it. Form a planning committee and rules or duties for the members. If the project is meant to benefit a particular group or neighborhood, it is essential that the group be involved in all phases. Make a list of what needs to be done.If your community garden has a budget, keep administration in the hands of several people.
  • Land for cultivation: Obtain a land for lease or rent for cultivating of plants in garden. Ensure you choose a land and location that suits best for your community garden. Decide on plot sizes, mark plots clearly with gardener’s names.Include plans for a storage area for tools and other equipment, as well as a compost area.Lay out garden to place flower or shrub beds around the visible perimeter. This helps to promote good will with non-gardening neighbors, passersby, and municipal authorities. Organize volunteer work crews to clean it, gather materials and decide on the design and plot arrangement.
  • Organize garden: Set up written rules which gardeners are expected to uphold. Members must decide how many plots are available and how they will be assigned. How will plots be assigned such as plots by family size, by residency, by need, by group– i.e., youth, elderly, etc. Allow space for storing tools, making compost and pathways between plots.
  • Communication: Good communication ensures a strong community garden with active participation by all. Include main ideas to consider in management, along with many different ways to carry them out. Have regular meeting and opportunity to meet members each other. Have regular celebrations and gardening show such as flower show, exhibition and sales of seed or plants etc.
  • Garden insurance: Garden insurance is a new thing for many insurance carriers and their underwriters are reluctant to cover community gardens. This helps you to cover loss due to theft or other accident in your community garden.

Community garden is growing trend is growing cities and urban areas where people don’t have place to grow their plants or vegetables. Start your community garden in small or medium size that can be operated easily. If your group is new, have several planning meetings to discuss your program and organization. Try out suggestions raised at these meetings and after a few months of operation. Consider creating a special garden just for kids–including them is essential. In order to offer a high quality community garden program, good management techniques are essential. Ground rules help gardeners to know what is expected of them. Angry neighbors and bad gardeners pose problems for a community garden. Choose bye-laws carefully so you have procedures to follow when members fail to keep their plots clean and up to code.

Role of property manager to Prevent fire mishaps

Apartment owners association, property manager and owners of commercial building can play a vital role in preventing fire mishaps in their apartment complex or commercial building. If any fire break out, occupants of building should be able to reach out of building safely. Measures or steps to prevent fire is important.Following measures and steps has to be taken to prevent fire emergency.

  • Emergency Evacuation Plan: Emergency evacuation plans or building evacuation plans are important for all buildings such as residential apartments, high-rise or commercial buildings.
  • Mock Drills at regular interval: Drills make you aware of emergency exits and how to react during a fire accident. Hold mock drills at regular intervals to create awareness on procedures to be followed in times of an evacuation.
  • Keep oxygen cylinders and masks: On higher floors, it is necessary to keep oxygen cylinders and masks to prevent smoke inhalation. This is especially useful for those with respiratory disorders for whom smoke inhalation can be very dangerous.
  • Medical Kits: On every floor, there should be medical kit including creams for burns, pain killers, bandages, splints, inhalers for asthmatics and IV fluids. People with paramedical training can manage the administration of these medications easily.  Ensure to keep drinking water in each floor.
  • No illegal construction: The building owners comply with all norms before obtaining an occupancy certificate and NOC from concerned department. But the problem starts when violations take place after the construction. These Illegal constructions often creates problem to fire department or ambulance in providing its service during emergency. In some buildings exit path will be blocked or doors would be locked which obstructs the path during an emergency.
  • Never store Diesel or LPG: In commercial buildings petrol, diesel or LPG will be stored in terrace for future use such as fueling generator or gas for pantry etc. Diesel or gas cylinders should be stored in underground safety tanks away from the main building. Preferably, store them in an open space away from electrical wires and fire.
  • Emergency Lights: Emergency lights enables building occupants to safely escape the building in the event of a power failure. Emergency lights become a critical element of a high-rise safety system in the event of a power failure. In many high-rise buildings emergency lights are connected to the building fire alarm system.
  • Update fire-fighting equipment: Property manager or apartment owners association must ensure that fire-fighting equipments are in good working conditions. Nowadays, latest fire-fighting equipment such as portable fire extinguishers, fire alarms that automatically turn on during a fire, sprinklers that turn on water automatically, as well as new warning devices such as the ‘break the glass’ systems etc are easily available in shops specialized for  fire-fighting equipments.

Simple steps to follow during emergency

Public address systems on each floor: Very often, panic reactions lead to stampedes and unfortunate deaths. Every building should be equipped with public address systems on each floor. Repeated reassurances are needed to calm people and prevent panic from taking over. Every floor should have a ‘manager’.These people should be in charge of managing the situation on the floor through an evacuation process. The basic skills required are calm response, awareness of basic safety measures and some paramedical training.

  • Call the Fire Rescue Department: During fire in your building or apartment, leave the premises by nearest available exit. Call fire department and do not assume anyone else has called the fire department.Never use lift for leaving the premises or apartment during emergency. If your cloth catches fire, do not get panic or run, stop, drop and roll.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a wet clean cloth: Stay calm Cover your nose and mouth with a wet, clean cloth to prevent smoke inhalation injury and choking.Never jump off or attempt to climb down the side of a tall building as it will mean certain death.
  • Do not run: During a fire, smoke containing poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide tends to rise up.When you run in a smoke-filled room, you tend to inhale the smoke faster. Carbon monoxide dulls the senses and prevents clear thinking, leading to panic. To prevent being asphyxiated, dip tissues or cloth in water and cover your nose with it.
  • Head-count of the occupants: During an emergency, make good use of the evacuation procedure and help each other to reach out of building safely.Ensure nobody is left behind by doing a head-count of occupants. Visitors should read and understand the evacuation plan before going into a building and ensure their safety.

Ceramic tile flooring is recommended to accommodate Indian conditions as it is stain-free, dust-free and scratch resistant. It’s best to have the kitchen sink in the northeast direction. The other water elements like drinking water should be placed in the northeast. Remember that taps and sinks should not be very close to the cooking range as Fire and water repel against each other.

These colors invite a person into the room with warmth and coziness. When using warm colors, be sure to intersperse whites and neutrals to tone down some of their intensity.

The latest in the market are the tinted neutrals that have casts of rose, blue or green, giving them a unique tone. Sewage Treatment Plant in Apartment Complex for Wastewater Treatment

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Sewage treatment plant (STP) plays vital role in the process of removing the contaminants from sewage to produce liquid and solid (sludge) suitable for discharge to the environment or for reuse. We know that 75% of the world’s fresh water resources are contaminated, the remaining is fast disappearing. Waste water is produced from toilets, baths, showers, kitchens, sinks, and so forth that are disposed of via sewers.

Why Sewage Treatment Plant

One question that many people might ask is, “Why not simply dump this wastewater onto the ground outside the house, or into a nearby stream?” If you release wastewater directly into the environment, things get very smelly very fast. Human waste naturally contains bacteria that can cause disease. Once water becomes infected with these bacteria, it becomes a health hazard. The increased algae, reduced oxygen and murkiness destroy the ability of a stream or lake to support wildlife, and all of the fish, frogs and other life forms quickly die. That’s why communities build wastewater treatment plants and enforce laws against the release of raw sewage into the environment.

Stages in Sewage Treatment Plant

Pre-treatment: Pre-treatment removes materials that can be easily collected from the raw wastewater before they damage or clog the pumps and skimmers of primary treatment clarifiers. The influent sewage water is strained to remove all large objects carried in the sewage stream. This is most commonly done with an automated mechanically raked bar screen in modern plants serving large populations, whilst in smaller or less modern plants a manually cleaned screen may be used.

Primary treatment: Conventional sewage treatment may involve three stages, called primary, secondary and tertiary treatment. Primary treatment consists of temporarily holding the sewage in a quiescent basin where heavy solids can settle to the bottom while oil, grease and lighter solids float to the surface. The settled and floating materials are removed and the remaining liquid may be discharged or subjected to secondary treatment.

Secondary treatment: Secondary treatment is typically performed by indigenous, water-borne micro-organisms in a managed habitat. Secondary treatment may require a separation process to remove the micro-organisms from the treated water prior to discharge or tertiary treatment. Secondary treatment removes dissolved and suspended biological matter.

Tertiary treatment: Tertiary treatment is effected by sand filters, mechanical filtration or by passing the effluent through a constructed wetland such as a reed bed or grass plot. Tertiary treatment is sometimes defined as anything more than primary and secondary treatment. Treated water is sometimes disinfected chemically or physically (for example by lagoons and micro filtration) prior to discharge into a stream, river, bay, lagoon or wetland, or it can be used for the irrigation of a golf course, green way or park. If it is sufficiently clean, it can also be used for groundwater recharge or agricultural purposes.

11022010_03

Sludge Treatment

Sludge produced by sewage treatment is organic in nature and contain useful amounts of plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and essential trace elements. The first objective should be to utilize the sludge as a fertilizer or soil conditioner on agricultural land. Sludge is treated using a variety of digestion techniques, the purpose of which is to reduce the amount of organic matter and the number of disease-causing microorganisms present in the solids. The most common treatment options include anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion, and composting.

Anaerobic digestion generates biogas with a high proportion of methane that may be used to both heat the tank and run engines or microturbines for other on-site processes. In large treatment plants sufficient energy can be generated in this way to produce more electricity than the machines require. Anaerobic digestion is a bacterial process that is carried out in the absence of oxygen.

Aerobic digestion is a bacterial process occurring in the presence of oxygen. Under aerobic conditions, bacteria rapidly consume organic matter and convert it into carbon dioxide. Once there is a lack of organic matter, bacteria die and are used as food by other bacteria.

Composting is also an aerobic process that involves mixing the wastewater solids with sources of carbon such as sawdust, straw or wood chips. In the presence of oxygen, bacteria digest both the wastewater solids and the added carbon source and, in doing so, produce a large amount of heat.

Role of bacteria

In the typical sewage treatment plant, oxygen is added to improve the functioning of aerobic bacteria and to assist  them in maintaining superiority over the anaerobes.  Aerobic bacteria require oxygen for life support whereas anaerobes can sustain life without oxygen. Facultative bacteria have the capability of living either in the presence or in the absent of oxygen. Microorganisms and their enzyme systems are responsible for many different chemical reactions produced in the degradation of organic matter. As the bacteria metabolize, grow and divide they produce enzymes. These enzymes are high molecular weight proteins. All treatment plants should be designed to take advantage of the decomposition of organic materials by bacterial activity.

Sewage Treatment Plant is becoming ever more critical due to diminishing water resources, increasing waste-water disposal costs, and stricter discharge regulations that have lowered permissible contaminant levels in waste streams. Effective waste-water collection and treatment are of great importance from the standpoint of both environmental and public health. In recent years, there has been growing interest in waste-water reuse as a major component of water demand management.

Recommended Sewage Treatment Plants for Apartments

Sewage Treatment plant system can be opened or fully sealed. Some apartments adopt partially sealed system. One of main disadvantage of opened or partially sealed system is sewage is broken down by bacteria and during this process methane is released into campus or at ground floor level. The gas released from sewage chamber due to biological processing (by bacteria) will contain methane. Methane is highly combustible and toxic.

Sewage Treatment Plant with opened or partially closed is not recommended for apartment or densely populated areas. In this system smell can be sensed for miles. This system is only useful for large sewage treatments. For small residential units a completely sealed package unit is recommended. Sewage compartments with methane gas should be located away from car parking or area that can cause ignition or spark. Any ignition or spark can easily catch fire in sewage compartments with methane gas.

For apartments or for small residential units, automated system is recommended as this will reduce maintenance cost. Disadvantage of manually operated system is, there are chances of human error of dry running the pumps or not starting pumps in time. This can result in machinery breakdown or overflow of sludge. Automated system helps to prevent breakdown or over flow and association can save more than Rs 15000 per month on maintenance cost. Manually operating system is cheaper to install comparing to automated system but cost of maintenance is higher when comparing with automated system. The system release methane. This is supposed to be in sealed chambers and then released at a point few meters above the tallest point of the building. This should be taken care while designing sewage treatment plant for apartments or high-rise. In Metropolitan cities and urban areas, sewage treatment plant or mini sewage treatment plant is mandatory for getting a new water connection. Please contribute your knowledge on installing or setting up sewage treatment plant. If your apartment complex has sewage treatment plants, feel free to share your ideas in maintaining Sewage Treatment Plants.

With some common sense and practical safety products you can ensure that accidents are avoidable. Following are some safety tips for keeping your children safe in kitchen.

  • Supervision: Supervise young children and first-time chefs. Never let your child cook alone. Don’t assume your children will know what to do with kitchen products just by watching you in the kitchen. Take the time to explain how each product works.
  • Keep things out of reach: If cooking on the stovetop while kids are nearby, make sure the handles of any pot and pans are turned in, and not facing or sticking out from the stove. This ensures that kids will not be able to grab hold of hot pans and tip them over.
  • Coil or wrap all cords: Watch for hanging appliance cords, as it’s easy for kids to grab hanging electrical cords and pull heavy appliances down on top of them. Coil or wrap all cords, and make sure they don’t hang over the kitchen counters.
  • Shoes and Safe Clothing: Do not allow your kids or children to wear loose clothing or anything flammable, and avoid synthetic clothing, which can melt onto their skin if it catches on fire. Make sure they are wearing Shoes and safe clothes too.
  • Electrical equipments: Never use or keep appliances that have a frayed cord and keep appliances away from water. And never allow your children to use fingers to release something caught in food processor blades or mixers.

The kitchen represents a dangerous environment for your Children or curious toddler. When you are supervising your child in the kitchen, consider having a cupboard that they can open and explore. Items made of glass or your favorite china dinner set should ideally be stored high up and out of reach. While you are taking boiling water to the sink to drain, ensure your children are seated away from the stove and sink so you do not trip over them. Always keep forks, knives and other sharp utensils out of reach on the counter or in a locked drawer or cabinet. Always put a safety lock on the cabinet containing cleaning products and sharp knives. Serious injuries occur when others slip and fall because of wet floors or foreign objects, so make sure your children understand the importance of cleaning up a spill as it occurs.

Rainwater Harvesting- An Efficient Water Solution for Apartment

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

The demand for water is increasing day-by-day and government fails to supply water and meet the increasing demand. Rainwater harvesting is not a new concept or technique, it is practiced by our ancestors for irrigation and feeding cattle or livestock. Apartments are mushrooming all over our cities with the boom in the housing sector. By designing systems carefully and investing in sustainable technologies, apartments can provide supplementary water requirement. Apartment owners association can play vital role in setting up or installing rainwater harvesting in apartment.

Role of Apartment Owners Association

Apartment owners can put pressure to builder while constructing apartment to implement rainwater harvesting either for direst use or for recharging groundwater. Apartment owners can form an association for implementing rainwater harvesting system in the apartment. The cost can be divided equally by all owners. The cost of installing a rainwater harvesting is high but when comparing the amount saved on water bill for future, this cost is cheaper or nothing. There must be a separate pipeline for rainwater and for groundwater. Nowadays each apartment will have its own apartment owners association who play vital role in managing properties and working for welfare of residents of apartment. An active apartment owners association can easily implement rainwater harvesting and your association can become role model for apartments in your neighborhood or in your city.

Rainwater Harvesting System

Rainwater harvesting system is collection of rainwater from the surface which directly receives rainfall. It can be a paved area like a terrace or courtyard of a building, or an unpaved area like a lawn or open ground. A channel or gutters are required to transfer rainwater collected from rooftops to storage tanks or recharge pit. One or more down-pipes are connected to gutters to transfer rainwater from rooftops or terrace. The size of the gutter should be according to the flow during the highest intensity rain.

When collecting rainwater it is very important to keep the water clean and safe. The first spell of rain carries a relatively larger amount of pollutants from the air and catchments surface. Without a first- flush system this will be washed off the roof and directly into your rainwater tanks causing the water to become dirty and possibly dangerous. The First- Flush Diverter is installed anywhere before the inlet of the water tank and the runoff from the first spell of rain is flushed out by using a first-flush before rainwater entering to the system or storage tank. There are several possible choices to selectively collect clean water for the storage tanks. The most common is the down-pipe flap. With this flap it is possible to direct the first flush of water flow through the down-pipe, while later rainfall is diverted into a storage tank. The filter is used to remove suspended pollutants from rainwater collected over roof. A filter unit is a chamber filled with filtering media such as fiber, coarse sand and gravel layers to remove debris and dirt from water before it enters the storage tank or recharge pit.

Working of Rainwater Harvesting

Rainwater harvesting system can be broadly classified as rooftop rainwater harvesting and artificial groundwater recharging.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting is quite popular since it is quite easy to collect rainwater falling on rooftops and terrace. In rooftop harvesting, the roof becomes the catchments, and the rainwater is collected from the roof of the house/building. It can either be stored in a tank or diverted to artificial recharge system. Rainwater from roof or trace is transported using PVC gutters. These gutters will be connected to filter using down-pipes. A filter unit is a chamber filled with filtering media to remove debris and dirt from water. Rainwater storage tanks collect all filtered rainwater and keep it for future use. The tank is placed on a small platform about 18 inches high and a tap is attached to it at the bottom. This makes it easy to collect water in a bucket.
