How To Make Your Windows Energy Efficient

Windows have to interact with the changing weather conditions, so weatherizing of windows is very important in order to make them energy efficient. You can make your windows energy efficient by following ways.

Make Windows air tight

One does not see, but generally there are gaps in between the glass and the window frame. In summers when the temperature of the building is regularized using air-conditioning, the colder air leaks out through these gaps making the air conditioner consume more time for cooling the room. So it is very important to make the windows airtight using weather-stripping caulks sealant.

Do Strategic landscaping

Planting deciduous trees are good for cold climates as they provide shade to the windows in summer and shed their leaves during winter to allow warm sunlight seep into the building interiors. This is a very effective way to use natural light. In warm climates evergreen trees are good as they will provide shade throughout the year.

Adding Sunshade

This is one of the oldest ways of preventing heat from the scorching sunrays. For the windows placed on the southern wall, a simple overhanging will do the job, but for the western and eastern walls, vertical or horizontal sun shading is required.

Add Solar screens

Adding solar screens to the windows are not always aesthetically pleasing but they help at places where fixing a sunshade is not possible. Usually a solar screen can be added on both the sides of the window; however, solar screen on the outer surface of the window is more efficient.

Using Low e-glass

Low E glass coating reflects heat and allows only sunlight to reach the interiors of a building. This coating helps in reducing the electricity consumed during warmer months without compromising on the sunlight.
