Behala, Kolkata

Behala is a developed suburb situated at the south western part of Kolkata. It was earlier under South Suburban Municipality but later on January, 1984 it came under Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The locality is linked to other parts of the city via Diamond Harbour Road.

It is one of the oldest residential areas in Kolkata. Prominent cricketer, Sourav Ganguly and Sovan Chatterjee, present mayor of Kolkata are some of its residents. The name Behala is assumed to have been taken from Behula, the female protagonist of Manasamangalkavya. There are also stories of it being taken from a local word, Bahulapur which means "land of many rivers" or "dark city". It is also said that Behala had many small villages under it whose names had suffix of Behala which could have one reason for its current name.

Behala is spread across Ward 118 and Ward 132 of the city municipal corporation. It is divided into Behala Paschim and Behala Purba Assembly constituencies. The areas that come under Behala are Taratala, Sahapur and Joka.

Some of the major schools close by are Vivekananda Mission School & M.P Birla Foundation Higher Secondary School (which are rated amongst the top 8 ISC Schools in Kolkata),Barisha High School, Behala Blind School, D.A.V Institutions, etc. Few health centres in vicinity are Vidyasagar Hospital, Balananda Hospital, South Suburban hospital, James long hospital, etc.

It is at a distance of 25 km from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport and nearest railway station is at Majerhat, 3 km away. Howrah Railway Station is 15 km away. Nearest metro terminus is at Joka which links BBD Bagh Metro Rail Project and has 13 stations in the stretch.

Behala is also one of the oldest industrial hubs along with residential area in the city. Many upcoming projects are getting developed in the vicinity. The major landmarks in the neighborhood are West Bengal State Archaeology Museum, Sabarna Sangrahashala, Behala Airport, Sonar Durgabari, Barisha Chandi Mandir, Siddheshwari Kali Temple etc.
