With the announcement of paying the property tax online in Kolkata, the property tax payment has become as convenient as just one click away. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s web portal with e-payment facility was launched in 2010 in Kolkata. The launched website provides all the details to the tax payers from which they will be able to deposit the KMC property tax without any inconvenience.

Earlier, the tax payers had to stand in long queues in the KMC offices to deposit their tax amount unlike now. This new web portal to pay online tax was designed by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at a cost of Rs. 2 crore. The funds to create the new website were provided by the Department of International Development, UK (DFID) under the e-governance programme.

What is property tax?

Property tax is paid by the owner for his property. The tax is levied by the government authorities of the jurisdiction where the property is located. Property taxes can be paid to a federated state, a national government, a municipality or the region.

How to pay online Kolkata property tax?

• To pay the property tax online the user has to follow the below link; https://www.kmcgov.in/KMCPortal/HomeAction.do?
• The link will lead the user to the main page of all the government related services of Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
• The online tax payment links which will be given on the right side of the page will have various options. The user has to click on the relevant link.
• Click on the make online payment link which will further give you many options.
• Choose the option of “property tax” which will give you three options.
• If you are filing your property tax for the first time, click on the fresh supplementary link and fill in the required information like the assesse number, contact number and the email id. Once all the information is filled, the user has to click on the pay button.
• The same follows to the user who has already paid earlier and he has to fill in the required details or fetch it from the previous payments by clicking the payment button.
• To get the complete details of the property, the user has to click on the link stating; ‘fill up property information form’ which is on the left side of the page or click the button stating ‘details’ and proceed with the payment.

• To get the printout of the unpaid bill, the user has to click on the option stating ‘print unpaid bill’ on the left side of the page.
• To check the tax payment status, the user has to click on the button stating ‘check payment methods’ which is on the left side of the page.
• Once the user has filled in the required details in the apt page, he can proceed with the payment option and thus the tax payment online is completed.

Property tax abbreviations

Few abbreviations to be considered while paying tax online;

• PD Bill: Periodic Demand bills, which are issued annually, based on the last decided valuation of the property.
• F/S Bill: Fresh/Supplementary bills, which are issued immediately after a hearing to reflect any changes to the earlier issued bills. Fresh bills are also issued after the first assessment of a property.
• LOI: Letter of Intimation is issued against outstanding tax bills (PD or/and F/S). LOI contains the following tax bills:

• All unpaid F/S bills which attract penalty
• All unpaid PD bills which were issued prior to the current financial year

Such outstanding bills can only be paid against the LOI.
