36000 Houses for Tamil Nadu Police Force
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalitha, announced that the personnel of Police Department, Fire and Rescue Services Department and the Prisons Department in the state would get their own houses as promised earlier.
Jayalalitha said that 36,000 residential apartments will be built on non-profit basis. 10 acres of land in every district will be allocated for the houses under “Own your House Scheme”. 100 acres of land in Melakottaiyur, Kancheepuram will also serve the purpose.
Under this scheme, houses will be allotted based on the positions of the personnel. 650 sq ft houses will be allotted for constables, head constables, firemen, leading firemen and assistant station officers. While sub-inspectors, inspectors, station officers and assistant divisional officers would get 850 sq ft houses. DSP and divisional officers would get 1,100 sq ft houses.
Privilege is given to the personnel with respect to their salary and location. The houses will be allotted based on the number of applications and their desired place of allotment. The cost of the house can be paid either by cash or in installments.
It has to be observed that the decision is the first of its kind in the nation’s political history. This move of the Chief Minister is appreciated by many leaders of various political parties.
