At present out of 30 lakh properties in Delhi only about 15 lakh properties are paying property tax. To make over this big difference the councilors have suggested Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to start sending the property bill to households just like electricity, water and phone bills. Since the property tax payers have shown a rise in number from 8.1 lakh in 2010-2011 to 8.5 lakh in 2011-2012, government has decided to keep the property tax offices open on Saturday in the coming February and march to facilitate the property tax payers . Though they will remain shut on second Saturday. To further encourage the property tax payers Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided not to increase property tax for the year 2012-2013.
In the financial year 2011-2012, property tax remains as the biggest source of income for MCD. It is been speculated by the councilor’s committee that the MCD will have a huge increase in the property tax collection if able to take up this challenging task of sending the bills at home.
