Versova is located in the northern part of the Mumbai city around the Andheri area. This place is known for its vicinity towards beach and Versova fort.
Versova was earlier known as Vesawe which comes from the Marathi word, rest. In Chatrapati Shivaji era, he used to get his navy for resting purpose in between battles and wars. In 1739, the place was part of Portuguese empire and then they lost it to Maratha empire.
The place is maintained by the local BMC civic body and Save Versova Beach Association has been formed to take care of the beach in the neighbourhood. Versova Beach has many residents called Kolis who are the fishing community. Fishing is the main occupation of the area.
It is at a distance of 10 km from Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport and 25 km from Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus.
