Hyderabad Online Water Connections Get Clogged
The plans of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to provide new water connections online seems to have gone for a toss. In the last two months, many denizens have filed online applications but officials like section managers, deputy general managers and general managers have reportedly made people run from pillar-to-post, to know the status of their connections.
The Hyderabad Online water connections system was introduced in February to provide hassle-free connections. However, out of 4,500 customers applying online, not even 50 percent connections have been sanctioned by officials. Before introduction of the scheme, HMWSSB managing director, M Jagadeeswhar announced new connection would be released to online applicants within 15 to 20 days. However, the reality is quite different as a few hundred people who applied more than a month ago, have not been sanctioned a new connection yet.
Executive director K Ashok Reddy admitted the delay in release of new connections, is due to slackness. “The Board has conducted a meeting with general managers of all divisions and expressed ire on the delay in sanctioning new water and sewerage connections. They have been ordered to speed up the process,” he said.
Out of 4,500 online applications received, the Board has sanctioned 2,000 and remaining are in process of sanctioning, according to Ashok Reddy. He added that officials have been ordered to clear pending applications by next week or face stringent action.
Usually, when a customer applies for a connection, the concerned official looks into the feasibility and goes through all documents submitted. After that, he has to forward the application to higher officials for sanctioning a new connection or improving the existing connection. However, this process had got stalled at the lower level, due to slackness of officials. Even the staff at help desks have gone missing.
