6 easy steps to paint your home
Are you bored of looking at the same old pale walls of your home? Would you like to have new-fangled walls all over your home? Painting your wall with gorgeous shades would give you all what you need.
Interior designer Priya Kaul says, “Painting doesn’t mean picking up a paintbrush right away. Preparation is everything. So first set up a big (covered) table and lay out the following tools on it: your dust mask, filling knives and filler, paint scrapers, dusting brushes, a mixing board made of MDF, sandpaper, masking tape, paint brushes – and last but not least, your paint (including white emulsion for the “miscoat”). You can get this all from any good DIY shop.
Wear your favourite old painting clothes and some old trainers too (shoes get spattered as well). Move most of the furniture out of the room and roll up the carpet/rugs. Push the remaining furniture into the middle of the room and cover it with a dustsheet. Put newspaper down in the area you are painting.
Commonfloor recommends six easy steps to paint your home.
Clean the walls:
Before you plan on giving your home a new look, remove all the dust, grime and dirty spots off the wall with water or any cleanser if required. You can also get rid of the grime using a mild dish washing detergent and a loft of sponge. Avoid scrubbing hard on the surface of the wall. Ensure that there are no cleanser spots remaining on the wall.
Keep the door and window frames intact:
In case you have your door frames, wall corners or your window frames peeling off, it is always better to tape them with a stronger tape while painting. This will also ensure that the paint is applied neatly. Ensure that you remove the tape immediately after painting to avoid scraping off the paint.
Give your walls a primary touch; use a primer:
Most of us believe that a wall painted innumerable times needn’t be primed. In fact, if you use a primer for your walls, you can maximize the sheen and the amount of paint needed while painting. The primer will also give you a smooth finish and more uniform appearance.
Use a brush in places you cannot roll:
There are various corners and trims in a home where you cannot use a roller. In such cases, you can use a small two angled brush. Places like the window trims, doors and moldings can be painted using a brush.
Use the patterned painting method:
It is always better that an amateur painter should use the ‘W’ pattern while painting. For efficient painting method, you can start painting in the corner of the wall and roll in a ‘W’ pattern. Continue doing the same till the portion is covered.
Painting the trim:
Once you have completed the painting process and when the paint is dry, tape the trims of the wall and paint the moldings, door and window frames with a brush.
