Let’s take a hypothetical situation. You decide to buy an apartment and find a good place within your desired budget. Now the next step is to factor in your budget. You say no to shopping even when it is a sale, give up your lavish dinners & parties, keep away from friends and hang outs so you could save up money for your dream home. After so much of sacrifice, scraping your bank account of its last penny and even taking a loan you finally sign a deal for your own apartment.
Finally!!!
But when you move in you realize that the spacious apartment you now own, is not so spacious anymore as you failed to factor in the furniture and other stuff you own. So what do you do???
In today’s scenario, space efficiency in an apartment is the biggest problem. Moving in and settling down in such an apartment can be a horrendous task. It feels worse to see an apartment which starts and ends a foot away and getting your stuffs inside the apartment becomes difficult. However, we all have to tackle this situation with a solution as has been done by many.
We can make our home look more spacious by taking some factors into consideration. If proper planning is done prior to moving in, the limited spaced rooms can be made to seem much bigger and spacious. A small sized apartment can also be changed into a “DREAM HOME”. There are many ways to make your small room look more spacious with minimal effort and less cost. Some of the ways are by arranging the furniture properly. Use correct paints and colour density to the walls. Storage of things and less cluttering around can be another option.
Tips to make your home spacious
Listed below are some of the space enhancing tips to make your home more spacious.
Placement of furniture: Place the furniture such that it does not come in the path way. Make use of furniture for dividing one big room into two. For example, a wardrobe can be used as a wall to divide one big room and can make two small functional rooms giving more privacy. A kitchen platform can be used to divide a whole kitchen and make room for dining.
- Storage area: Reduce the clutter in a room by making more storage area underneath the furniture. Make use of multi functional furniture like a cabinet can be used as a table. E.g. A bed with drawer or a coffee table with cabinet will suit this purpose. If it is a studio apartment, then a two in one sofa which can be changed into a bed or an inflatable bed can be used. Wardrobes which go into the wall and folding tables and chairs can be used as furniture. Use hooks or shelves behind the door for keeping more clothes.
Paints & Colours: Light and pastel colours can make your room look bigger. Use colours like white, cream, yellow, icy blue for a better illusion. Light as well as bright colours reflect more light making the space look more open and airy. Avoid use of dark colours as they absorb more light and make the room look dark. If your room has low ceiling then paint it with light vertical paints to give it a high rise look.
- Natural light: Let the natural light fall into the room. Do not place any high rise furniture in front of the windows. Use huge glass panes or try making it a French window (floor to ceiling window) to give a more spacious look to your room. If small windows then try keeping it clutter free with nothing kept on the window sills.
- Mirror-mirror on the wall: Place a mirror in your room to make it look more spacious. A Mirror will help reflecting both natural and artificial light. Mirrored cabinets can also be used to make use of less space instead of hanging them on the wall. Keep the mirror at a focal point such that light focus on it.
Electronics: Make use of optimal electronics keeping in mind the minimal space. Use a LCD or TV which can be mounted on a wall instead of occupying space with on a table. Make use of laptops than personal desktop computers. Use split AC rather than a window AC or cooler.
- Interior decor: Do not clutter the room with many pictures and photo frames. This takes the large part of the wall. Instead use only one/ two pictures throughout the room. Keep the room neat, organised and tidy. Limit the number of accessories. Use feng shui and Vaastu tips. While decorating the house create a focal point which will be eye catching and arrange all the decor and furniture around the focal point. Try utilizing the space on the wall more than the floor.
- Broaden the flooring: You do not have to use tools and widen the flooring. Make use appropriate flooring material and carpets for a spacious look & feel of the house. If you have a small room then do not use a carpet. Carpets make a room look smaller and dull. Use laminated wood flooring if possible. It gives a larger appearance. Tiles can also be used which help in fooling with visual effects.
