Water treatment for prevention of disease

Traditionally strong chemical oxidizing agents have been used, Chlorine is common pool sanitizer. Chlorine has some side effect to pool users or swimmers. Burning eye, dry skin, bleached clothing are some side effects for chlorine.

Electronic oxidation and copper ionization are chemical free and eco friendly disinfection technology. Salt water chlorine generation, copper and silver ionization, ozone use, mineral purification are some of the alternative sanitation.

  • Chlorine generators (salt systems): Chlorine may be generated on site, such as in saltwater pools. This process generates chlorine by low-voltage electrolysis of dissolved salt (NaCl) using an electrode incorporated in the pool plumbing, eliminating the requirement of manually dosing the pool daily with powder chlorine. Annual rainfall contributes to dilution of the pool water, which will require regular “topping up” with several 50Lb (20 kg) bags of salt for the average size pool. Salt pools generate chlorine and its main disinfection byproduct is Bromoform, a persistent organic pollutant accumulates in the environment and is extremely harmful to aquatic life.
  • Copper and Silver Ionizers: Copper is a very effective algaecide and silver is a very effective bactericide. This unit releases copper and silver into the pool water as well as an oxygen catalyst. This combination allows the pool to be operated with much lower chlorine residual. In swimming pools ionization alone is not sufficient as a sanitizer and requires either natural oxidation or chemical oxidation such as chlorine. A control unit can decide how much copper and silver to release into the pool.
  • Ozone Generators: Ozone is produced by passing air through a high voltage electrical discharge, or corona. A minimum of 5,000 volts of electricity is necessary to create the corona. You will also still need to use some chlorine (or non-chlorine shock) in your swimming pool to keep it clean. There are two basic types of ozone generators: the Fluorescent Ray, and the Catalytic cracker. Catalytic units may not work as well in humid climates, as the incoming air contains moisture which may defeat the process. It is advised to not have a pool cover installed while the ozone unit is operational in either a swimming or spa pool, as O3 in concentrations is destructive to PVC and will cause premature deterioration.
  • Mineral purification: Mineral purifiers work in a similar fashion as ionizers do. By passing the pool water through minerals such as silver and copper the natural properties of these minerals attack the algae and bacteria present in your pool water. This residual can be achieved by shocking the pool if/when the pool water becomes dull or cloudy.

    Hi,
Swimming pool water should look clean, clear and blue—you should be able to clearly see the painted stripes on the pool floor. Bacteria can develop when foreign substances such as leaves, insects or dirt enter the pool. Also look for drainage grills at the top of pool walls; water should be constantly lapping over the grills to be filtered.
