Choosing Energy Efficient LED Light

031001 031002

With the growing concern over energy-consumption it’s no wonder that so many people are turning to low energy light bulbs to light their homes. When we look at energy efficient lighting, we often think if Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL). However, Light Emitting Diodes, or LED, can save energy and the life span is much greater. LED lights are ten times longer lasting than CFL, and last several times longer than incandescent bulbs. If you shop the LED bulbs online, you can use the shopping comparison search engines to compare the prices and efficiency between different lighting stores. When choosing a LED light, you should check the wattage and Lumens of the bulb.

Wattage and Lumens

It is important to have a basic understanding of terms such as wattage and lumens while choosing LED lights. Wattage refers to the amount of electricity that the light bulb uses. If it has a high wattage power, it will consume a lot of electricity. A 100 watt bulb will light your room far more brightly than a 40 watt bulb. This has always been true for filament bulbs and halogen bulbs, but with LED lights it’s quite different. LED lights are typically rated from 1 watt to 5 watts, which is in stark contrast from the levels of power you may be used to.

Lumens are the amount of light produced by a bulb. The greater the lumens, the greater will be its brightness. LED bulbs generate a high level of brightness, or lumens, for very little power, or wattage. But they are also focused lights, meaning that they focus a cone of light at a specific area. When you are choosing an LED light it will be important to know how it will be used and where it will be installed. The advantage of LED light is that almost 100% of the light being generated by the LED bulb is directed exactly where you need it, rather than being wasted, diluted and scattered everywhere.

Calculate Lumens per Watt

Lumens per watt (LPW) are an efficacy rating given to light bulbs to determine how much light they produce for each watt of energy they use. Light bulbs with high efficacy ratings mean more savings on your power bill. Calculating LPW requires using the simple mathematical formula.

  1. Discover the wattage of the bulb either by looking on the box or at the actual bulb.
  2. Discover the number of lumens the bulb produces by looking on the box. This may be written as lumen output.
  3. Divide the light bulb’s lumen output by the number of watts the bulb needs. For example, a 100-watt light bulb usually has 1800 lumens, so the LPW is 18.

Before buying the lights, you should identify the types of connections used for the bulb fittings. There are two types of connections including GU10 and MR16 or a GU5.3. Make sure you know which connection you need. Once you know the connection, have a clear idea where your LED light bulbs will be installed, and what level and focus of light you need, you can use the shopping comparison search engines available online to compare the prices between different lighting stores.

Switching to LED lighting can save 40 to 70 percent of the electricity and leading to reduction in consumption of coal through which electricity is generated. LED Light bulbs offer a range of different lighting options, from colored lighting to dim and romantic lighting, there is an LED bulb to suit your every lighting need. LED lights are ten times longer lasting than CFL.
