Safety and security checklist for an apartment
Every apartment owner chooses his/her apartment based on various aspects. Some like to stay closer to their friends and relatives and some like to stay in the city, and some other choose their apartment based on the price and so on. Perhaps, thinking of all these factors seldom give them a chance to assess and consider the safety and security of an apartment before moving in.
Below are few points to be considered before moving into an apartment;
Leaving your apartment unlocked:
Some owners leave their main doors unlocked if they have office space in their apartments. The doors might be unlocked for either mail services or other deliveries. In case you have an office in your apartment, ensure that you either have 24/7 controlled access to the door or have a front desk security guard. However, be alert about the secondary entrances like the courtyard, garage, etc. In case of smaller apartments, make sure that you lock the front door with a deadbolt.
Door with peephole and deadbolt:
Ensure that your apartment door is made of steel along with a one-inch deadbolt. Having a wooden door with just a simple doorknob lock is quite easy for a burglar to break in. Have peephole on your apartment door as it will make it easy for you to see the person outside your door without opening it.
An apartment with well lit parking area:
Ensure the parking space of your apartment is well lit especially at night. You should also make sure that the area has a security patrol and is access controlled. Keep an eye out for any dark corners, overgrown shrubbery or open courtyards.
Security at the pool and gym:
Most apartments have various amenities like pool, gym, clubhouse and others which do not have security always. As an owner, ensure that the access is limited only to residents and the pathways leading to these areas should be well lit.
Overall, the security in an apartment should be maintained well and also the residents should be made aware about the security steps to be taken.
