Since electrical appliances and cooking gas are used in the kitchen, fire safety precautions are a must. All members of the family must follow kitchen safety measures carefully, especially while cooking in the kitchen. Here are a few kitchen safety tips that you can easily followed to make your kitchen safe place.

  • Leakage of gas: If you smell gas in the kitchen, turn OFF the regulator of cylinder immediately. Open all windows and doors of the kitchen, so that there is adequate air supply. Do not turn ON any electrical appliance in the kitchen at this time.
  • Childproof lock: Put a childproof lock not only on the cabinets with your medicines and cleaning supplies, but also your oven. Keep young children out of the kitchen while cooking. Store cleaning supplies and all chemicals in a safe place. Use safety latches.
  • Handling cooking utensils: Position cookware on the stove to ensure the handle does not come in direct contact with heat source. Do not use metal cooking utensils, use only wood or plastic utensils when cooking in titanium cookware. Always use a heat protection pad or trivet with rubber feet for hot cookware, or leave cookware to cool on the hob first. Never put hot pans, particularly cast iron, directly in a sink. Such heat can damage any surface.
  • Use short sleeves when cooking: Wear short sleeves when cooking on gas stove tops so that the fabric does not catch fire or snag on a pot handle. Always be aware when children are in the kitchen and keep them occupied with crayons or toys away from the stove. Keep matches and lighters in high places where curious little hands can’t reach them.
  • Handling Knives in Kitchen: Don’t put knives in a sink of soapy water – they may not be seen and accidents can occur. Wash and dry carefully keeping sharp edge away from your hands. Always cut away from your body when using a knife. Never attempt to catch a knife as it falls – better it hits the floor than cut your hand. Wash and dry Knives carefully after each use keeping sharp edge away from your hands.
  • Fire extinguisher: Keep a fire extinguisher in or near the kitchen, but not near the stove or the heater. Keep emergency numbers handy. You can seek your neighbor’s or property manager’s help in case of emergency.
  • Avoid storing snacks above the stove: To prevent a curious child from a climbing accident, remove all snacks from shelves above the stove. Avoid storing kid’s toys or belongings in kitchen shelf or storing in or around stove.
  • Handling of gas appliances: Do not repair gas appliances by yourself. Get a profession to repair it. Get all gas appliances serviced regularly. Turn off the gas cylinder before you leave your home or before you go to bed. It is always recommended to turn off regulator of cylinder after use. Use gas appliances that are approved and are of good quality. Do not turn on any electrical appliance in the kitchen, if you smell gas.
  • Floor should be dry and clutter free: A kitchen with good housekeeping can reduce slip and trip hazards. Stored materials should not obstruct pathways and exits. The floor should be dry and free from spills and obstructions – to prevent slipping or tripping. Don’t leave boxes, stools, bags of groceries or anything else out on the floor where they can trip up a fast moving cook.
