Tips on how to arrange furniture in your home
Moving into a home is incredibly exciting and the excitement may blur your vision so as how to place your furniture once you enter the house. Where to put the furnitures is a big challenge as the solution to this ever elusive question may determine how your home will look. How and where you place the furniture will give the impression of how you live in your house. Furniture should be placed in a room in such a way that it makes living pleasurable.
Here are some of the tips to make arrangements of furniture easier.
1. Size up the room: The first step is to measure the room where furnitures are to be placed. Whether it is a bed room or a living room, placing of furniture will be much easier once you know the size of the room.
2. Choose the focal point: Focal point of a room is the place which grabs most of your attention. It may be the large windows or the art work on the wall or a fireplace. You want to showcase it the most and arrangement of the furnitures should be in a way that the special place/thing is visible from most of the seating positions in the room. In other words, the focal point would be that around which other furnitures would be placed.
3. Traffic flow: Keep the flow of the traffic in mind when you are placing the furniture. You may like a particular coffee table or an antique artifact and want to showcase them. But to put them in a room where chances are high that someone or the other would bruise their knee or would hit the table or artifact, may not be a good idea.
Always leave 30-35 inches for walk ways. Avoid straight paths if you have young kids or pets, as straight paths may lead to speed which can prove to be disastrous for fragile collectibles.
4. Do not clutter: Arrange furniture in a way that projects all the attention on the focal point. Place the big furniture at first; like sofa sets, office desks and beds. Do not cluster furniture in front of the focal point. If you choose your centre table to be the focal point, then put a pair of sofa on either side of the table.
5. Goal is to be comfortable: Do not forget that the ultimate goal of placing the furniture is to be comfortable while one is in the room. Arrange seats so as they face each other and keep the seats within about 8 feet from each other. Leave a space of about 16-20 inches in between the sofa and the coffee table.
6. Variety: You should add variety to the furniture in a room. Mix furniture of various sizes and instead of keeping everything parallel to the walls, try to play up angles, diagonals to give a casual look to the room. Placing sofa tables, plants, coffee tables would lend a balance to the room with big sofas. Do not all the heavy furniture in a single room.
7. Add more space: By placing every furniture piece against the wall, you create empty spaces in the middle of the room. Try not to place bed or other pieces against the wall and keep a distance of at least 2 feet in between the bed and the wall.
Remember that creating a beautiful view of the room depends upon how you place the furniture. So, rather than trying to fill in the room, try to visualize the room with an eye of an artist with the furniture.
