Traffic congestion in Bangalore- A rising concern

Traffic congestion in BangaloreThe people of Bangalore have slowly grown to jams, which the city offers in abundance.
Bangalore, the IT hub of the nation, is one of the sought after cities of the nation and has witnessed rapid growth of industries in the last few years. Growth of industries in the city has subsequently fueled the increase in the number of moving vehicles and eventually leading to traffic congestion problem vehemently.

What further stimulates the traffic pressure in the city is the lack of scope for road expansion, and the need to utilize the existing roads for trouble-free movement of the vehicles is even more distinct. The rising traffic congestion issue is taken seriously by the government and BBMP only when it has reached alarming levels.

Main Junctions

Generally, the roads in Bangalore perform beyond their capacity. The volume: capacity of the roads ranges between 1:3 and 1:5. Some of the prime congested roads in the city may include:

Hosur road traffic jam
Hosur road is one of the highly congested part of the city, which boasts of some of the great companies of the nation. This area has garment factory, smoke erupting lorries interstate buses, highway trucks and other adequate reasons for congestion in traffic.

Koramangala Jam
Another part of the city which is highlighted as one of the congested areas in Bangalore, is Koramangala/Forum mall. From fancy restaurants to retail stores and malls, this area includes all. As such, parking problem is evident in the area which is why people park their cars near the road and contribute to less road space, eventually leading to congestion.

KG road congestion

KG road is another location in Bangalore where traffic congestion is a major issue. From taxis to autos, this area has it all. Furthermore, this road connects to the City Railway station, which is a major reason for the surge in traffic issues in this locality.

Reason for Congestion

Increasing traffic and road surface has few severe environmental issues related with it. Such issues include traffic jams, congestion, loss of open land because of civic transportation routes and numerous types of pollution and related health problems.

Growth in urban population and the middle-class segment contribute significantly to the rising number of vehicles in the city. Congestion in traffic eventually results in slow speeds, which increases the time of travel, thus stands-out as one of the major issues in metropolitan cities.

Rate of vehicle growth in Bangalore

Rapid increase in population because of IT and other related sectors in the city contributed significantly to the rise in vehicular population. At present, there are 4.1 million vehicle owners and the annual growth rate of vehicles in Bangalore ranges between 7-10%. The average growth of vehicles in the city in 2012 was 41 lakh per annum.

Growth in population and expansion of the urban region of Bangalore has led to the rise in connectivity problem among the populace. The personalized modes of transportation has increased tremendously and two-wheelers together with cars contribute to almost 90% of the total vehicle population in Bangalore.
