Welcome goddess Lakshmi with colourful rangoli this diwali
Rangoli is a folk art from India. They are decorative designs made on floor, in front of the entrance door, living room, pooja room, courtyards, etc during Hindu festivals. They are considered as sacred and meant to welcome deities. Rangoli designs are made with coloured rice, dry flour,(coloured) sand or even flower petals.
With Diwali just around the corner, let’s welcome goddess Lakshmi with a blend of traditional and modern rangoli designs. Rangoli can be of two types, wet and dry. Dry rangoli is made with natural or chemical colors, flowers and petals. Wet rangoli is made with paints.
Designs:
During Diwali, the most common traditional designs used are lotus, flowers, geometric shapes, swastika and Oms. You can make the feet of goddess Lakshmi entering from the entrance door to the pooja room. You can also make everyday new and customised rangoli according to your choice. Patters like leaves, mango, fish, different kinds of birds, human figures and foliage can create a spiritual aura in the house.
Rangoli all over the house:
Not only the floor, but also you can design water pots and walls with rangoli. For walls and pots you have to use wet paint and colours.
Materials:
Rangoli made with colours and paints are very common. This Diwali, spread the colour and happiness with flowers and candles. Use floating candles and different colour flower petals to create rangoli. You may need stencils to draw proper patterns. Some important materials you need are candles, diyas, wet cloth, chalk, and small glass pieces, a sieve, orange, black, brown colours and turmeric powder and sindor. Colours like black and brown can be made by cinnamon powder and mustard seeds.
The Procedure:
You have to wipe the floor with wet cloth in order to stop the colours from spreading. Draw a border with chalk around the area where rangoli designs will be made. Choose the base colour and spread it first. Then with the help of your fingers spread the colours or flower petals over the chalk designs. Use glass pieces to decorate it. Use candles, diyas and an idol of Ganesha or Lakshmi as embellishments.
The idea and purpose of rangoli is faith and believe according to Hindu mythology. Welcome home the goddess with colourful and creative rangolis and enjoy this Diwali with creative rangolis.
