Thane, Mumbai

Thane is one of the suburbs located in the north eastern part of Mumbai city spreading across 147 sq km. It is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Thane, most popularly known as the first station where India's first train ran from Boree Bunder, now called as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Thane, then Tannah.

Thane has many historical importances from time immortal. First mention of Thane was in the research works of Greek geographer, Ptolemy. Many festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali, Gudhi Padwa, Durga Puja, Mahashivratri and Shivaji Jayanti are celebrated in great zeal in this part of the city. Thane was previously conquered by Roman Catholic in the 1800s.

As per 2011 population census, it has a total population of 2,486,941. Some of the villages which come under it are Majiwade, Balkum, Dhokali, Kolshet, Wadavli, and others.

It is at a distance of 40 km from Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus and 27 km from Chattrapati Shivaji International Airport. Thane Municipal Transport (TMT), Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT), Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) and MSRTC (State Transport) provides daily buses inter and intra city. There has also been proposal of laying rail line in the vicinity covering 11 stations.

Thane has seen a residential boom in recent times because of cosmopolitan culture from neighboring cities. Many immigrants have moved to this part of the city making the real estate sector's demand going higher.
