Located on the banks of the river Yamuna, Agra is a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. While the national capital Delhi lies 200 km to its north, the state capital Lucknow is located 363 km to its east.
Agra is a major tourist spot on the world map. One of the wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal is situated here, and attracts great number of tourists from across the globe. Other major tourist attractions in the city are the Fatehpur Sikri and Red Fort, which along with the Taj Mahal are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Nationally, Agra lies on the Golden Triangle tourist circuit, with Delhi and Jaipur completing the triangle.
Historically, Agra was a very important city. It was the capital of Hindustan under the Mughal rule. Three of the great Mughal emperors, namely Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan ruled from Agra until Shah Jahan shifted his capital to Shahjahanabad (Delhi).
Even today, Agra is still a very important city on the map, mainly for its historical significance and tourism.

Popularly recognized as an old town with historical monuments, Agra is now shedding this skin and transforming into a modern city. Agra’s tourism industry has fueled the city’s infrastructure development to a large extent.
Agra already has excellent transport infrastructure. New developments in the pipeline are the construction of the Agra International Airport and Agra-Lucknow Expressway. The development of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and the expansion of the Phase-II of the Metro Rail to include Agra are also in the pipeline.
It was during the Mughal era that Agra became a center for Islamic education. The British, then, introduced western education in the city. And during the British rule, Agra became a center for Hindi literature. Coming from such a background, Agra has an enviable education infrastructure today, with several quality schools, colleges, and universities having set up base here. Popular colleges are Sarojini Naidu Medical College, the Institute of Mental Health and Hospital, St. John’s College, and Central Institute of Hindi.

The Agra Jal Sansthan is responsible for water supply and sewerage services to Agra. It works towards providing uninterrupted water supply and proper sewerage facilities to the city’s residents.
