10 Don’ts when you Design your Kitchen

Kitchen being one of the most essential parts of any home, having a perfectly designed one is a need as well as a challenge. A kitchen must be designed in such a way that it offer ease in performing your daily chores as well as pleasant to work in. However, there are certain definite don’ts in a kitchen design. Let us take a look at the top 10 don’ts when you design your kitchen.

Obstructing the Kitchen Triangle: An important thing to keep in mind while constructing or remodeling one’s kitchen is to not obstruct the kitchen triangle. The kitchen triangle is the space connecting kitchen sink, gas stove and the refrigerator. Make sure that there is free movement between these three most essential points.

Ignoring Store Room: Ignoring storage room is one of the most common mistakes found in many homes. Not everything in a kitchen space can be confined to a kitchen cabinet. There must be a dedicated space to keep random stuff without making the kitchen appear too cluttered. Keep a side / a small room adjacent to the kitchen for storing miscellaneous things.

Ignoring Counter Tops: Counter tops are slowly being kept out of many modern kitchen designs. Counter tops may sound and look a little old fashioned but having a horizontal setting with counter tops on the kitchen surface is a convenient and helpful solution as some additional storage facility.

Unplanned Lighting: If the lighting inside the kitchen is not carefully plan, it can cause you lots of troubles. Kitchen needs bright lighting. So while designing the kitchen, make sure that the lights are positioned straight in all key areas and not from the back side.

Forgetting Back Splash: Back Splash is a commonly ignored area when it comes to designing kitchen space. Ignoring back splash space may help to save some money in the short term but it can come back to haunt us with the high humidity and grease content in the kitchen.

Ignoring Ventilation: Kitchen without effective ventilation can become one of the worst and foul smelling areas of the house. Having good natural ventilation must always be part of any new kitchen design. Of course other sources of ventilation like exhaust fans and chimneys must be used but there is no real substitute for natural ventilation.

Old Recycle Bin: Many people do not focus on waste bins and still use traditional bins to store waste. If you are designing a modern kitchen, try and use a recycle bin with dedicated compartments for organic and inorganic waste.

Replacing Substance with Style: In an attempt to make kitchen look trendy and modern, many people spend a lot of time and energy on beautification and compromise on quality. Always make sure that kitchen is smartly designed for effective use. The looks are secondary.

Ignoring Professional Help: People take the help of professional interior decorators and designers for bedrooms and living rooms but never for kitchen. Using the services of a professional designer can sometimes be the best decision one can make while designing a new kitchen.

Ignoring Gas and Plumbing Connections: Make sure that the gas and plumbing connections and fixtures have all security mechanisms. Having a small fire extinguisher installed in the kitchen is also an idea one may consider.
