Modern lifestyle has made us take certain things for granted. The use of power and energy is one such. Saving energy and electricity could mean living a greener life. Here are the top ten ways which help to converse electricity smartly in our day to day lives.

Use compact fluorescents: Replacing conventional incandescent bulbs by Compact Fluorescent Lamp(CFLs) is one of the best ways to save from unnecessary wastage of electricity. Conventional incandescent bulbs use four times more energy than CFLs. CFLs not only use less power causing a massive reduction in electricity bills, they also last up to eight times longer than conventional bulbs. Nowadays LED lightbulbs are available which save electricity bills than incandescent bulbs and CFL bulbs.

Energy efficient appliances: While buying an electric appliance, make sure to buy the one which is rated as more power efficient. Usual electronic products like fans, air conditioners and even irons are now rated as per their power saving capacity. Opting for a better rated product can help in reduced electricity bills as well as a greener planet.

Turn OFF when not in use: Turn off the electronic devices when not in use. This can help save electricity as well as reduce carbon emission. Many people who know this, but never do this.

Reduce air conditioner power consumption: Reducing the use of air conditioning can help save power thereby helping in lower consumption of coal and other conventional energy sources. Always strive to keep the auto thermostats of the air conditioner a few degrees lower than the desired temperature for best results.

Use Solar Water Heater: Using a solar water heater instead of traditional electric water heater can go a long way in reducing energy efficiently. Solar water heaters save approximately two thirds of the water heating costs. What’s more the government of India provides subsidy for users or housing societies installing solar water heaters.

Use of multiple point power strips: Use of power strips and surge protectors offering multiple connections are a good way to conserve electricity. The use of multiple point power strips save electric appliances from power surges and voltage fluctuations.

Multi-Use Solar Chargers: Every house has multiple electronic gadgets including mobile phones and tablets that require constant charging. Use a solar powered battery charger to charge your gadgets are a perfect way to save electricity and reducing your electricity bills.

No substitute for natural light: There is no substitute for natural light. Many people go for dark paints inside rooms as a trend, which results in the use artificial lights even during the day. Embracing natural light is a small, but significant step for a substantial relief from electricity bills.

Switch off and unplug: Many people think that by simply switching off the main power supply their devices is not drawing any electric current. The fact of the matter is that all appliances even as small as a mobile charger or a coffee maker continues to sap energy while its switching off but still plugged in the circuit switch. Unplugging one’s device is the only foolproof solution to not allow any wastage of electric current.

Insulating the Ceiling: Using air conditioners? Using a roof insulation technique one can actually keep the house nearly 5 degrees warmer in winters and 10 degrees cooler in summers. Roof insulation is a onetime expense leading to a long term savings as well as helping in keeping the planet clean and green.
