Ahmedabad Focuses on Affordable Housing
Ahmedabad has been accredited as one of the most liveable cities in Asia. The Gujarat government is aiming at making the city resident-centric. As such, the government is focusing on providing housing for all segments, specifically affordable housing.
Focusing on affordable housing
At a recently held meet in Ahmedabad for All India Councils of Mayors, the state’s Urban Development Minister spoke about how Ahmedabad is aiming for providing affordable housing for all citizens. The Mayor of Ahmedabad aims at providing a healthy and prosperous lifestyle for the residents of the city apart from affordable housing. The Urban Development Minister said that the city aims at providing basic facilities such as open spaces, gardens, electricity, water, educational institutions, healthcare, connectivity, transport and infrastructure along with low-priced houses.
Mukhya Mantri Gruh Yojna
The state’s Mukhya Mantri Gruh Yojna is a scheme that aims at making Ahmedabad slum-free by providing affordable housing. According to the scheme, there are about 22 lakh homes planned for the urban areas and 32 lakh houses planned in rural areas. The scheme aims at both economically weaker section (EWS), the Lower Income Group (LIG) and the Middle Income Group (MIG).
The EWG section is classified as the population earning less than Rs. 1 lakh per annum, while the LIG is classified as the population earning between Rs. 1-2.5 lakhs per annum and the MIG is classified as the population earning more than Rs. 2.5 lakhs per annum. The beneficiaries will be provided easy home loans, instalments and interest rates under this scheme.
To implement these kinds of projects, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority and other town planning bodies have already reserved land around the BRTS and Sardar Patel Ring Road. The government is also planning to develop the areas in such a way that buyers can find their offices nearby, which will significantly reduce traffic time and woes. To provide affordable transport for residents who would be moved towards SP Ring Road, the government is also planning to extend the BRTS.
