All you need to know about Kochi Metro!
Kochi, also known as Cochin, is the major port city on the west coast of India. Rapid urbanisation and intense commercial developments in recent times have resulted in steep rise in travel demand putting metro project in stress. With upcoming mega projects such as Smart City, Info Park, Fashion City and Vellarpadam container terminal etc. in the pipeline, the travel demand is expected to shoot up by strengthening the transport infrastructure in the Kochi region. The population is also growing here at a rate of 1.4 per cent every year.
1. The Kochi Metro Rail Project is also known as Komet or K-3C.
2. The construction work for phase 1 metro was started in June 2013. This phase consists of 25.65km long elevated route from Aluva to Petta. This route will include 22 stations.
3. The phase 2 will include an extension from Aluva to Angamaly via Cochin International Airport, an extension from Petta to Tripunithura, and a branch line from Palarivattom to Infopark via Kakkanad.
4. The Kochi metro will feature a single line route.
5. The Metro line will be connected to Cochin International Airport via Aluva and Tripunithura via Pettah in the future.
6. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided a $400m loan for the project.
7. The estimated completion cost is Rs.5181.79 cr.

9. Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) is about to sign a term loan agreement with Canara Bank for an amount of Rs. 1,170 crore in Kochi on July 20.
11. Real Estate sector in Kochi is witnessing a boom due to the metro project. The prices in the region are expected to increase by 10-15 per cent in the coming months and there might be a 20 per cent increase by Onam.
