Baskets can be the best storage objects

In every shape, style and colour they are so versatile, you can add a basket to any room and it will look charming and welcoming. No matter how organized you are, you’ll agree that there will always be a need for extra storage. And that’s where we believe, baskets come to your rescue. In every shape, style and colour, they can work as the right décor accent – giving your room a charming and warm look.

When it comes to baskets, shapes and sizes abound. From the smallest basket which can work as an accent for your potpourri to a mid-size which can work as storage for the clutter around – it’s all about weaving the decor accent into your living space.

Rattan or twig, bamboo or wood – you can get them in an array of sizes, shapes and styles — round, square and tubular forms… with or without lids. They are lightweight, really good for children’s spaces, the kitchen, home office, basement, living room etc.

Ideas we love:

We fell in love with this beautiful colourful basket which has been re-cycled to store little toys in the children’s room.

We loved this idea – add some wheels to a sturdy basket and you’ve got a chic accent in your living space.

An old dresser stripped off the doors and spruced up with a coat of paint and neatly stacked baskets makes the perfect office accessory.

The perfect accent to your study – It’s simply amazing what a basket can do to give the room a warm touch. From your magazines to little cushions, or simply as a last minute storage accent – the versatile basket is a definite must have.

The perfect accessory in your living area – cosy and inviting, isn’t it!

Kitchen and Entryway

  • Place a medium-sized, tabletop basket by the front door to hold keys, sunglasses, mail or anything else that you might want to drop the minute you walk in the door but will need to keep track of later.
  • Display fruit and organize your kitchen by gathering your produce in a shallow fruit basket.
  • Free up counter top space in your kitchen by hanging a long, thin basket on the wall to hold kitchen utensils.

Basket benches are another great decorative and useful touch for a kitchen. They are essentially finished wooden bench seats with two shelves underneath, the bottom shelf being able to hold up to three decorative storage baskets. Everything from children’s color and water painting supplies, art and craft items, toys, puzzles, books, etc., to toaster, mixer, cookbooks, place mats and table decorations can be stored in the baskets.

Bedroom

  • In the bedroom, place a small basket on a dresser or night table to collect your wallet, spare change and other pocket-sized valuables such as jewelry and glasses.
  • Store throw pillows or extra blankets in a fashionable basket at the end of your bed.

Table Shelves

Use a wicker or wood basket and use silk flowers to make an interesting floral arrangement.  A small basket can be placed in the bathroom on a shelf or above a cabinet while a larger basket can be placed on the coffee table or shelf in a living room.

Bathroom

  • Throw dirty clothes in a lidded basket in your closet or under a bathroom counter.
  • Use lidded nesting baskets to hold bathroom essentials such as cotton balls, band-aids and cotton swabs.
  • Organize your bathroom closet using a series of small storage baskets.
  • Roll up towels and washcloths and place in a basket by the tub or shower.
  • In the guest bathroom, gather travel-sized shampoo, disposable razors, sample-sized toothpaste, net scrubbies, sample deodorants and bubble bath, and fresh washcloths and hand towels. Place in a basket along with a welcome card for your guest.
  • Place toilet paper in a tall basket where it is accessible.
  • Organize makeup in a basket divided and made for tableware.

Living Room

  • Keep children’s toys out of sight by storing them in a lidded basket.
  • Store old magazines in a basket by the sofa.

Tip of the day:

Select baskets in the same colour scheme, but ones that vary in size. Try stacking two on top of each other and place one larger basket beside for balance.

CommonFloor recommends:

Use baskets that fit the style of the room the best. For example, a modern style room would not have an old-fashioned wicker basket but a country-themed room would be perfect for that style of basket.
