BMC Mumbai: Budget 2016-17 focuses on Infrastructure projects
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta presented the annual budget 2016-17 recently. The budget focussed on the flagship schemes of the central government and large allocations were made for road projects. The budget allocated was Rs 37,052 crore for 2016-17 and Rs 1,000 crore provided for Mumbai’s Coastal Road. This includes Rs 2,806.80 crore for the improvement of roads while Rs 1,340.01 crore would be spent for cement concrete roads and Rs 1,466.79 crore for asphalt-mastic roads. Important junctions on major roads will be strengthened with asphalt.
The budget has proposed major roads in Island city, improvement of side-strips and footpaths and concretization of major roads. The budget focuses to improve connectivity and reduce the travelling time from one part of the city to another. M.G.Road, Tardeo Road, Aacharya Donde Marg (part), G.D.Ambekar Marg (Part) in island City would be major roads taken up in 2016-17. The roads like Shraddhanand Road in Western Suburbs, Ghatkopar Mankhurd Link Road, Andheri Ghatkopar Link Road, L.B.S Marg in Eastern Suburbs would be concretized in 2016-17. The budget also proposed the improvement of side-strips and footpaths of Veera Desai Road and Achyutrao Patwardhan Road.
A provision of Rs 1 crore is made for proposed flyover at JVPD Circle in Western Suburbs, flyover at south bond of Sangeetkar Sudhir Phadke Bridge in Borivali (West), S.V. Road to Linking Road by extending Jogeshwari (South) Flyover, Jogeshwari (North) Flyover is proposed to be extended crossing S.V. Road towards Linking Road. A budget provision of Rs 5 crore is made for proposed flyover at Lokhandwala Back Road to Yari Road, Amarnath Tower. The budget has also proposed construction of a major flyover of about 2.1 km Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road and Rs 81 crore is proposed in the budget.
This year BMC budget estimate is about 10.54 per cent more than last year. The budget has proposed the installation of LED streetlights, Rs 75 crore provided for constructing 3,340 new toilets and Rs 10 lakh provided for the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme. The budget has provided Rs 75 crore for maintaining 219 gardens, parks and open spaces.
