Centre announces first list of 20 Smart Cities
The Central government today announced the names of the 20 smart cities and towns that will be developed in the first phase. A total investment of Rs 50,802 crore has been earmarked for the development of these cities and towns over a period of five years. Early last year, CommonFloor had predicted the names of few of these cities in its report titled “20 Smart Cities to be Identified in 2015.”
The selected cities will be equipped with basic infrastructure, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity and e-governance mechanisms. Going forward, the government plans to announce 40 cities each to be developed as a Smart City.
The names of the 20 Smart Cities announced today include:

- Belagavi
- Bhopal
- Bhubaneswar
- Chennai
- Coimbatore
- Davangere
- Guwahati
- Indore
- Jabalpur
- Jaipur
- Kakinada
- Kochi
- Ludhiana
- New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC)
- Pune
- Sholapur
- Surat
- Udaipur
- Vishakapatnam
