Checklist for Planning Interior Design
- Make a list: Refer to home decoration magazines, websites, articles etc and collect pictures of the kind of home you would want. These visuals can help you communicate your ideas to your architect and interior designer. Ask certain relevant questions to yourself about the space and function, How many members live in it, theme for the house such as traditional, modern or international style, the kind of rooms and the location, the uses for both family and guests and priorities, whether you will have senior citizens living with you etc. Remember it is easy to add an area rug, furniture or window coverings, but hard to change wallpaper or permanent fixtures.
- Figure out your budget: The budget includes fees of designer, labor charge, cost for purchase of things etc. Once you commit to the budget, you can then make clear decisions concerning what will be done when. Indicate the things, rooms, projects that are absolute musts.
- Choosing a designer: Once you have your budget and wish list, it is time to contact a professional. Look for someone you feel comfortable with and is open to ideas. Once you present the plan, the designer can help you clarify the practical and functional aspects of your design. Informing the designer about your budget too is of prime importance. Once he has the estimate on place, he can work the finance around this figure. This also ensures that there is no overspend. Moreover, if the interior designer has some preferred suppliers on his list, he could help you with some welcome discounts.
Ask your friends or colleagues about an established interior designer they know of. It is best to opt for someone well-known rather than a name from the telephone directory or carpenter working in some apartment. Get all terms and conditions in writing.
Have a look at his portfolio to see whether his work matches your design preferences. Quiz the chosen Architect or Interior Designers on their technical “know how” and access their confidence in responding. Make sure they have an office or an address to impose the defects liability clause. While the design can be drawn to suit your imagination, sharing your preferences with your architect and interior designer can make that dream home become a reality.
