Colours: The use of warm colours to create the right mood
Use different colours to evoke passion, intimacy, warmth and cosiness at home
If you don’t think about mood, you may design an impressive-looking room that makes you vaguely uncomfortable. Be it the play of colors, lights or simply dramatic accents, it is all about creating the right mood. And this season, it is all about bringing in the cozy factor for your abode. Delightful shades in earthy tones or regal shades in bright colors – it’s a potpourri of exciting elements that can weave in an instant makeover.
Know your color basics:
After you’ve chosen what mood you want in a room, choose your color scheme. A room works like an artist’s canvas.
- Pink: fun, lively, positive and feminine
- Red: passionate, daring, intimate, comforting, stimulates appetite
- Orange: stimulates creativity, evokes warmth and cosiness
- Yellow: welcoming, sunny, and linked to promoting intelligence
- Green: tranquil, invigorating, restful and balancing
- Blue: clear thinking, calm, meditative
- Violet: stimulating, sexy; blue-violets are cooling, spiritual
CommonFloor recommends:
- Do not go over the top with these bright colours. Chose a toned – down shade or use a bright color as an accent against a neutral backdrop like a grey or white.
- Create a cosy corner: Plump up your corner with cozy pillows in interesting warm colours. Earthy tones are in – warm browns, deep reds, muted oranges, soft lavender to add a dash of drama to the corner.
Commonfloor recommends:
- Mix and match your colours and fabrics. Different textures teamed up with a blend of colours makes the space a true delight. Or simply go with a flow – keep your cushion in one tone and add a dash of drama with a bright coloured accent. It’s all about creating a cosy nook which invites you into its fold.
Create a sensual corner:
Accessories play an important part in creating the sensual element in your decor. Beautiful candles, velvet upholstery, muted colors set against dramatic embellishments – all of it work into creating an aura. Consider every color when it comes to creating this effect. For me, working on a color scheme for a room is akin to putting together a puzzle. And the wall color is merely one piece of the big jigsaw puzzle. Furniture, soft accents, lights and natural light – all of this affects the color and the mood.
Create a chic statement on their own:
The muted browns and greys would seem dull and drab – but with the right elements in bold colors, they are transformed into a visual delight. I love to play with my lime green, fushcia or blue to brighten my muted tones. A red or gold will always add the drama or will cozy up my grey. Dramatize the walls with interesting art or simply accent it with pictures in various frames with an underlying theme. The eye searches for the conversation starters.
Commonfloor recommends:
- Get rid of the clutter. Too much drama creates a conflict.
- Make it work for you: Interior Designer, Piya Gill recommends:
- Decide what mood you want the room to embody.
For a relaxed feel:
- Create more texture in the room by mixing and matching elements. Use various shades of a single color to pull a room together. Add different textures such as suede and silk to give the room a regal touch.
- Create a tranquil oasis with white. Dot it with interesting furniture – period or clean straight lines in dark browns and the transformation is truly a delight. For the luxe feel, reach out to off white – it adds a dash of glam and yet feels bright and crisp.
For the warm look:
- If muted tones are your flavour, then team it up with interesting elements. And I believe that if you are lost in the world of colors and textures, stray a bit from the perfect match and get comfortable mixing colours together.
- Don’t be afraid to saturate your room with colors – we loved the idea of playing with mint green chairs against a bubble gum pink wall creating a light hearted playful mood.
- To add a dash of coziness, paint the ceiling a shade darker which brings the room together.
