Dining room design ideas: Lighting
Every space in a home defines its relationship with you and how you live. Dining room is that special place in your house which occupies an essential space in your family life as well as shares it with guests invited for meal. Dining room has to be lighted in such a way that it comforts you; make the lunch or dinner a pleasurable experience.
Choose lighting as per design
Dining room can be a place for formal dinner as well as a family get together. Ambient lighting can be created in the dining room through general, task, and accent lighting which will set the mood for a comfortable time at the dinner table.
While going for lighting ideas for home, always remember to match the fixtures with the design of the house, no matter for what room it is. The perfect lighting can alter the mood in the dining room and bring both fun and fashion to it. You can arrange lighting in a way that ranges from being bright to dim and accordingly create an ambiance you like your dining room to have.
You can opt for three basic layer of lighting – ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.
Ambient lighting
Ambient lighting highlights your wall, open areas and spaces and furnitures with an easy glow, without intruding or being bright. You can add ambient lighting to your dining room through means that are inexpensive and thoughtful. Ambiance can be created by allowing daylight to come in through window screens or light being reflected by wall colour or by warm light being poured from overhead light from above at night.
Task lighting
Task lighting is different from ambient lighting in the sense that it focuses more on being location specifice. Its pivotal traits are brightness, beam direction, keeping a fixture like table lamp or pendant lamp close to the task area like sofa or table. Even bulb’s colour is considered thoughtfully as to it would determine the temperature of the area in the room.
Accent lighting
Accent lighting is all about changing the mood and atmosphere of the room. It is about providing dramatic spots of light wherever you want them in the room. Usually narrow beamed lighting is used to highlight an area that you like the most – whether it is an art work or favorite painting or sculpture on a wall or mantel.
Common lighting fixtures
Chandeliers:
Chandeliers offer a classic look to your dining room; along with being a source of light. Brass chandeliers have made their way to the modern ones made of metal. Always choose a chandelier that covers the light bulbs, rather than the ones which has bulbs directly shining down on the table. Chandeliers with their lights pointed upwards usually diffuse the light from the bulbs.
Lamps:
Lamps provide a good source of lighting apart from being a design element. Do not choose lamps that are too short or too tall. Always keep in mind the design of the room while choosing a lamp and place in it the different areas to know which would be the best area to keep the lamp.
Sconces and candles:
Sconces are a beautiful tool to add ambient lighting to your room. They add a warm glow on the walls of the dining room, providing warmth to the room.
Candles also illuminate the room in a way that adds romanticism in the ambiance. They can adorn the dining table or buffet or any shelf in the room.
