Do’s and don’ts for septic system maintenance

There may be several reasons behind it, including poor planning and lack of proper maintenance. When septic systems fail, it may have a lot of negative impacts not just for the residents, but for the community as a whole. It may have an impact on the health of the people residing close to the system. In order to avoid any such situation, it is very important to follow some do’s and don’ts for ensuring safe and smooth working of septic systems.

Do’s for septic system maintenance

Keeping a record of system drawings, site plans, the equipments that have been installed and service records of the system will help immensely if the system fails. The above information will help in finding out the problem without wasting much time. If the fixtures are leaky, it may result in a lot of water constantly being added to the system. Thus, it is important that such leakages are detected timely and repaired.

Do ensure that you install a good effluent filter inside the tank to reduce the level of solids inside the tank. Also, it is very important to have a regular maintenance and pump out in every 3-5 years or at a frequency considering the size and capacity of your system. It is also advised to keep a record of all the previous works, repairs undertaken the system for easy detection of any related issues in future.

Don’ts for Septic system

Allowing solid waste in the tank may result in its clogging thereby requiring frequent solid removal from the wastes. Products that are used for personal care like sanitary napkins, wet wipes, cigarette butts, bandages and diapers must not be allowed in to the septic system. Also avoid dumping pharmaceuticals, food waste, chemicals like pesticides, paints, or chemical solvents into the tank as it can disturb the natural bacteria present inside the tank.

In order to ensure its proper working, it is very important to ensure that the septic system is located in a proper location, should be designed in a proper way and installed with great care. After installation, the system should be maintained from time to time so as to avoid its failure. If any solids get clogged in this system, it may fail. Thus, a periodic maintenance of septic systems is very essential. In case any problem is detected, it is best to contact maintenance provider immediately.
