Earth Day Activities for Kids
Since the Earth day is universally celebrated to define the importance of environmental aspects, most of us must be thinking of various activities for the kids on this occasion. But first, we all need to know the origin, importance and facts concerning the celebration of the “Earth Day”. Let us take you to some of the facts of Earth day.
The initiation of the Earth Day was on 22 April 1970. Since then, the celebration of Earth day is carried out to mark the reflection on our planet, our environment and how to keep it healthy and clean. The key place to celebrate this event was in various schools and colleges, apartments in India or in your neighborhood to get the maximum support. Children consider the goals of this event and follow the steps to keep our planet a healthy place. Other than just making the children aware about the earth day, there are various numbers of activities which can be carried out.
Collage: Schools, colleges and associations can organize competitions with the themes related to Earth. Themes like how to reduce pollution, how to save water, tips to reduce globalization and others related to the same can be taken up. Since our planet is a vast area, you can think of various creative topics to create a collage on.
Essay competition: As mentioned earlier, our planet is a vast area and one can think of innumerable topics to write as an essay on. Topics can be related to the earth factors like earth, water, air, soil and so on. Other than an essay competition you can also organise a debate completion on saving earth and various imperative topics.
Awareness campaigns: This is one of the best ways to make the citizens aware of the significance of the Earth Day. Campaigns can be organized in schools, colleges, apartments, streets, parks, malls and many other public places. Other than having colourful banners picturing the harm done to our planet, you can also train children and adults to perform a street play or make them walk on stilts, flash mobs and others can also be performed. Also Pamphlets and notepads depicting that can be distributed all over. Advertisements on papers, magazines, information mediums and hoardings can also be carried out.
Songs: The children can write their own songs or seek the mentors help in order to write songs related to Earth Day. Various songs and rhymes can be sung by the children.
Face masks: Another entertaining activity for the kids is to design various animals and nature oriented figures. Children can make their own face masks with colourful papers and accessories and stage a play in their schools, club, park or any other place.
Painting/colouring: Younger children can be given readymade drawing sheets with figures depicting the significance of the Earth Day and older children can be given themes on various topics related to the same and can be asked to paint rather than colouring.
Crafts: You can be innovative and ask the children to think of various crafts which they can make like a volcanic mountain, hills, valleys and others. Children can also make projects of all the related topics as well. Apparently, an exhibition on an event can be held to display all the craft and project work done by all the children.
Speech: Earth Day events can be organized where children can be asked to pick the topics on the spot and talk a few lines about it, or they can prepare a speech beforehand and talk on related topics.
Recycling and reducing: You can form various groups and show the children on how to recycle the paper and reduce the usage of paper and other related harmful objects. There are various ways and techniques by which we can reduce and recycle innumerable objects.
Posters: Various posters with the Earth Day theme can be made before the event and pasted/hung all over the apartment area or streets. Doing this will also make the children happy and proud for creating their own drawings which will be displayed to the public
Games: There are various games related to the Earth Day which we can organise. You should be creative and create your own games like memory game, hangman, jigsaw puzzles, tic tac toe, word search, word scrambles, crossword, dominoes, mazes, Sudoku, word search, word ladder and others which are related to the event.
Hiking: Having some adventure as a part of the activity will make the children enthusiastic. You can organize for a hiking/trekking trip with all the necessary equipments. Plan a day before about the place and the things to be carries out. Ensure that all the children are in good health and are aware of the instructions to be followed. On the particular day, an adult can take up an initiative of giving a brief talk about the Earth Day to the children and start their trekking/hiking trip.
City cleaning: Plan a day before and gather all the children at a particular spot. Tell them the instructions and the dress code, equipment which they will be carrying. Spilt the group with each group having an adult/teenage supervisor and go to every street to collect the debris and clear the streets seeking the help of the municipality.
Energy conservation: The parent has to take up the initiative to mark the importance of the Earth Day and go organic and eco-friendly for that day. Reduce the usage of electricity and harmful chemicals, eat healthy and organic food, purchase organic attires, clean your home with natural disinfectants and re-use things rather than disposing them off.
Gardening: You can get the gardening equipments for your child and instruct him to create his own garden. Children can either form a group and make their garden by planting ornamental and small saplings or make their own garden in a corner. Also explain them the process of plants and their advantages.
Eco friendly crafts: Children can make an array of eco-friendly crafts ranging from baskets to hair bands, flowers, vases, animal figures, napkins, ornaments, décor and others.
