Few curtain do’s and dont’s
One of the best ways to add glamour and personality to your room is to frame your windows through long curtains and drapes. Before you buy those elegant and graceful designed curtains for your room, you should be aware of the few important points which might save you from a disastrous home decoration.
Before you buy curtains for your room, decide on the color and pattern you should go for. Ensure to choose curtains according to the room color and decor. Since curtains acquire a large amount of visual space, they play an important role in creating the visual appearance of your room.
Avoid skimping on the size as curtains need to have generous proportions. Ensure that they are at least double the size of the window width even if you will draw them often. They should be long enough and you can create a rich and sophisticated look by letting them puddle on the floor. Create a streamlined and clean look so that they easily skim the floor. However, avoid keeping them higher as shorter drapes look too truncated. It is advisable that you get store-bought panels which are long enough and can hang them if required.
To control the room temperature as well as the light flow, you can choose line panels. Opting for a basic cotton lining will protect the fabric as well as will allow some light to filter in. However, having an insulating lining curtain can keep your home warm during winters and cool during summers. To make the room darker by not allowing light inside, you can choose a blackout lining for your curtain. Such curtains are apt for bedrooms.
Be specific about the hardware as the curtain rods and finials should aptly match each other along with the fabric. If you prefer heavier velvet drapes, install them on large and decorative rods and curtains made out of silk material can be installed on light-weight and dainty rods. Ensure that the rods match the room decor and connect to something in the room. Likewise, you can have a Lucite drapery rod to match the Lucite lamps or chairs in your room.
Ensure that you choose the right type of fabric for every room. A cotton curtain is easy to maintain and clean. Although opting for a velvet curtain can create a luxurious look and provide privacy, it can be quite heavy. Other type of curtains like sheers are light and graceful but do not offer much privacy. You can also opt for a woolen curtain to create an embellished look.
The finials for a curtain should be chosen carefully. Although they are quite small, they can add a perfect finishing to your curtain rods. Work carefully on all the details of all your rooms.
Always hang the curtain brackets on the wall above and outside the window molding. Doing this will allow the fabric to fall gracefully. For detailed window frames, you can opt for partial covering through an inside mount on the wall.
You can create the illusion of a taller window by mounting the rod 4-6 inches just above the window frame or even halfway the window frame and the ceiling surface. Also, a track mounted on the ceiling will also lengthen the window. Do not forget to include the right amount of fabric while measuring.
