Gurgaon surpassed Bangalore in Internet penetration in India
Gurgaon has a better score in Internet penetration in India and has overtaken over the IT hub Bangalore, Hyderabad and mega cities like Delhi and Mumbai. According to census 2011, Gurgaon has 20.9% household penetration of the Internet.
As the technology has been evolving, India has been witnessing an increased Internet revolution growth. Talking specifically about the net penetration growth in states of India, Gurgaon has surpassed the much popular Silicon City, Bangalore, which is an IT hub of India. It was noted that in Gurgaon, over 1,02,000 people have computers and more than 67,000 are Internet-enabled. Apart from IT sectors contributing to the increased Internet usage, the housing societies and the residential colonies have also played an important role in the increased usage of Internet by proving Internet service providers (ISPs) and offering ‘broadband-ready’ apartments. There are a number of realtors who are partnering with the net service providers to offer free installation of the Internet connection in the newly built flats and apartments.
The Internet service providers in Gurgaon are hoping for a rapid increase in the next five years. Also it is predicted that broadband will be advanced on mobile telephony. Although Gurgaon has surpassed the major cities in Internet penetration, the rural parts of it still are not advanced with Internet facilities as out of 88,000 registered households, only 1.8% has Internet facilities. The broadband penetration in the rural parts is very low.
The cyber city Gurgaon, is the third highest city with its per capita income in the country after Mumbai and Chandigarh. Perhaps, this city is a ray of hope with an increased Internet usage in the country. Adding on to the Internet frontward, a new scheme by the government called the Bharat Broadband Network will be launched to increase the services. This program will be launched with an aim to connect at least 500 million users by the end of 2020. The rising popularity of the Internet will also facilitate the state’s new e-government schemes in Gurgaon. Also there will be a new data centre set up in Chandigarh based on a cloud based model.
The household penetration of the Internet in Gurgaon has increased up to 20.9% which is way above the average of the country, i.e.10%. The increased usage of the net in this region is due to a large number of techies and professionals. Maximum number of citizens in Gurgaon are employed in IT sectors and telecom companies which further results in an increased Internet usage. Gurgaon has high Internet penetration with balanced billing as a millennium city.
It is seen that Gurgaon has been facing an increased and rapid developmental changes from the past 15 years as there are many multinational companies which have come up and have set up their business. This in turn has increased the techie and professional’s population.
