Tips to make your kitchen clean and safeThe kitchen is the busiest part of the house. There are lots of activities going into the kitchen. It is the most common area of the house for accidents and injuries. Safety in the kitchen is must for you and your children.

By taking simple steps, you can avoid many accidents in the kitchen. Here are a few tips for a safe kitchen.

  • The flooring of the kitchen should be of slip-resistant material. Also, keep the floor clean and dry to avoid injury due to slip or fall.
  • Proper lighting is very important in the kitchen to avoid injury while preparing food. There should be a task light focusing on the work station.
  • The electrical switches, plugs and appliances should not be near water sources and should not be operated by wet hands. Instruct your children not to put their fingers or hands in or near sockets.
  • Do not leave the kitchen while cooking. Always switch off burner and appliances immediately after use. Unplug appliances when not in use.
  • Do not wear loose sleeves or baggy clothes and do not leave your long hairs loose while cooking as they may catch fire if come in contact with the burner.
  • Keep a portable fire extinguisher near or in the kitchen but away from cooking station and equipments for emergencies.
  • Child lock the appliances, refrigerator, cabinets and burners while you are not in the kitchen for safety of your kids.
  • Keep knives, lighters, matches, scissors and other dangerous equipments in drawers where your children cannot reach them.
  • Instruct your children to stay out of the kitchen. Make sure no one will interfere with your space when cooking to avoid spills and injuries.
  • Put a smoke alarm in the kitchen, that goes off when fire breaks out in the kitchen to avoid accidents and injuries.
  • Pot handles should be turned away from the front of the stove, so that your child cannot pull them down and no can bump into them.
  • Keep combustible items like dish towel, plastic containers and pot holders away from the cooking stove.
  • Install faucets with anti-scald devices to prevent the water temperature from rising to high level or install faucet with temperature control setting.
