Commonfloor expert Aditi recommends, “Decorating a coffee table’s surface is an essential element in completing the room’s overall look.”
It’s easy to plop down some coffee table books, fresh flowers and a tray, but it may not be pleasing to the eye. When selecting items to decorate the surface, keep in mind basic principles of design including scale, balance, rhythm and harmony.
Take into consideration the scale or visual weight of your coffee table and the other furnishing that embody the space. For eg: A round glass coffee table, which has less visual weight than the surrounding furnishings is complimented by a decorative plate, fresh flowers and a couple books – all heavier in visual weight than the coffee table itself.
A large Indonesian bowl on a stout wooden coffee table creates rhythm in the space. I am not sure how this bowl was acquired, but showcasing treasures from your travels is always a wonderful way to make a space personal and act as a great conversation starter.
A simple accent like a beautiful potted plant and candles work wonders on your coffee table. Adding flowers, succulents, or even herbs can provide such a beautiful and colorful focal point to the space.
Choose one large arrangement or multiple, smaller potted arrangements to showcase organic elements.
Add a large candle in a glass hurricane to add a dash of glam to your coffee table.
When collecting / searching for items to display on your coffee table, add a focal point and/or something that showcases and symbolizes you and your interests. Personalizing a space truly makes it yours! You’ll want one piece or element to dominate the table surface. Choose something that’s sculptural and quirky to express your personality.

Choosing the right table
Before accessorising your coffee table, it’s important to actually select a coffee table style that fits your needs and lifestyle. Before deciding on a table, think about its function and how it will be used. Is the coffee table in a formal living room or is it in a space where the kids will be hanging out doing homework or your husband will be putting his feet up watching TV?
