Inspired Ideas: Playfully mixing and matching decor
Traditional decor is taking a bold new eclectic twist. Gone are the matching sets of furniture in the dining room or bedroom. No longer do the cabinets or granite counter tops on a kitchen’s perimeter have to match its center island. As home decor – like fashion – becomes more relaxed, casual elegance rules. Infused with personal, playful touches, these days the chicest rooms mix but don’t match. Call it edgy classic or rustic meets contemporary. Scramble vintage with modern; jumble sophisticated with fun – it’s a style which mirrors you.
Decorator Ashwini Modi says, “ Don’t be afraid to try patterns to make a room pop.
We love the idea of mixing a bold linen print as a wall paper which works well with a striped pattern rug. A fluid, curving pattern and a geometric one can look great together, so try it. You just have to pull out your swatches, try things out, and trust your eye. If it’s hideous, try again.
Long underused, dining rooms are becoming a catch all room for formal dinners, breakfast, homework and arts and crafts. Big farm tables are increasingly popular because “you can beat them up and dress them up”.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but edgy classic design, blending traditional decor with an unexpected dollop of modern, or jazzing up a contemporary space with antiques gives a room an eclectic and interesting oomph.
Balance scale
Your patterns need to complement one another, so if one is bold, the other shouldn’t be too busy. The patterns are clean and simple because the ikat on the sofa is so busy.
Play with Polka Dots
Multiple shades of green, punctuated with a pair of upholstered stools, to create a cozy window seat. The polka-dot pattern on the stools acts as non-print. Use a polka-dot fabric like a solid, but it’s a solid with movement. It excites your eye.
Mix and match
Designer Runa Gupta is averse to the typical cookie cutter room. “cookie cutter rooms,” She likes to place antiques such as a funky vintage trunk at the foot of a bed. Bedrooms sets are out; nightstands and chests need not match. She says, “I like when you walk into a room and you have to investigate the whole thing. It is so much more interesting that way. I like to have something that’s a little bit of a surprise in a room, using a material in a different way.
Graphic Artist Prashant More says, ““It’s a balance. There is a fine line between something that is eclectic and something that is just a mish mash. Mix and match style has soared in popularity because it can help blend what you already own with what’s new. In kitchens, center islands contrast with perimeter cabinets and countertops, with up to four colors and species of wood to make the cabinetry look like furniture.
