It is based on the principles of accepted energy and environmental concepts.

Green Buildings in India
India is a high performer in green building and has crossed the magical 7 billion sq.ft. of green building footprint and is now trying at going past the 10 billion sq.ft. by the year 2022 when India would be celebrating its 75th Independence. In reaching this milestone of 10 billion sq.ft., it will probably replace the US and China to take top positions. It ranks 3rd among the top 10 countries for (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) LEED. There are almost 3,200 projects that are participating in LEED in India.
As per V Suresh, Chairman of Indian Green Building Council more than 5,400 green building projects, amounting to 7 billion sq.ft. of space in about 18 years are coming up by 2022.
Govt projects where Green Buildings Concepts are being used
Over the years, green buildings have taken the first position in many government leadership like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), and Smart Cities Mission. The real estate sector in India has taken note of the benefits of going green and hence many famous green buildings have been built in the country over the last decade.
Green Buildings India Update 2020
Maharashtra topped the country in the list of green buildings with 373 projects, owing to its policy of granting incentives for green buildings. India remains to be a global leader in green buildings. By exploring LEED certification for buildings and spaces, India is not only contributing to economic growth and development but actively upscaling living standards for its residents by providing more flexibility, healthier and efficient buildings and communities.
The Green Business Certification Inc (GBCI) issued the list of top 10 states for LEED in India. And the U. S. Green Building Council’s LEED green building certification system is a rating system that values the design, construction, maintenance, and operations of green buildings.
As per GBCI’s list, in terms of total gross sq.m. (GSM) of LEED-certified space, Maharashtra topped the list with 10,258,564 sq.m. closely followed by Karnataka with 9,691,621 sq.m. of certified space. As of 31 December 2019, these two states Maharashtra & Karnataka had 373 and 301 LEED-certified projects respectively. Beating last year’s 2nd runner up, Tamil Nadu, Haryana claimed the 3rd spot in the list this year. The rest of the list comprised of Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Telangana, West Bengal, Gujarat, and Rajasthan placed in the 4th till the 10th place sequentially.
The top 10 states for LEED are home to more than 840 million Indians, and collectively include more than 475 million gross sq.ft of LEED-certified space. The complete rankings are given below:
