MCG aims to avoid dumping of construction waste in city
Members of a citizens’ group in Gurgaon, named Malba Hatao, had a meeting with the municipal commissioner P C Meena to discuss about how to reduce construction waste and debris in the city.
The members said that, the municipal commissioner has promised to earmark a site wherein a construction waste recycling plant can be set up soon. She is also planning to allot multiple transit dumping sites across the city along with other civic agencies such as the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and the Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP).
The group, on Thursday, discussed mainly three issues with the municipal commissioner – about finalising a site for setting up a recycling plant at the earliest, to identify places for transit dumping sites and to make a provision to penalize builders and owners who dump construction waste wherever they wish to, revealed another member of the group.
As per sources, six transit dumping sites have already been identified in the city, among which four sites have already received technical approval from the authorities. The group requested the authorities to find out more sites to set up dumping sites, and include other agencies such as HUDA and DTCP, because the major part of the construction activity takes place will be in their jurisdiction.
The members also demanded the municipal commissioner to follow a measure, according to which, completion certificate should not be granted to those who dump construction waste and debris on the wayside, apart from penalising them. Only laying a penalty is not proving much effective in stopping such people from dumping wastes on the roadsides. Hence, ordering that CC will not be issued to them would be more effective in this regard.
The MCG commissioner is looking to visit the recycling plant in Burari (Delhi) along with the group members in order to understand how the plant is actually working and how it is being maintained. The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has identified a site for the recycling plant near DLF Phase-I, but according to a source the site might not be finalised because it is located very close to the Aravalli region, for which the National Green Tribunal could raise an objection.
