Minimalistic design for a holiday retreat
Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe
Minimalism : less is more
The House is designed by Mies van der Rohe for Dr. Edith Farnsworth between 1945-51. His house was designed with a purpose of holiday retreat, where she could spend her holidays and enjoy her hobbies like playing the violin and translating poetry.
This house seems to be floating on the ground and its white and light look makes it outstanding in the surroundings. The steps from the ground to the deck in front and the plinth of house provides it a rhythmic connection with the land.
The use of clear floor-to-ceiling glass, provides an extreme degree of openness of the interiors to the surrounding landscape. Two horizontal steel slabs forming the roof and the floor are kept exposed and painted white. Though the use of the materials has an influence of modern technologies but the connection of the human with the house and the house with the nature gives it a vernacular look, I mean it seems that the house is a part of the landscape.
