Natural Ways to Get Rid of Spiders in the House
There’s no denying the fact that spiders are the most universally hated creatures on this planet and no one wants even a tiny spider in their house. There are many deterrents to keep the eight-legged arachnids away from your house but the safest ones are simple home remedies that doesn’t involve harmful chemicals.
Lemon coats
The easiest method here would be to use lemons or any other citrus fruit you can find. Take a lemon peel and rub them around the window frames and door frames to cover them in scent. Spiders hate citrus fruit smells and wouldn’t barge in when they smell lemon all over the place. You can also mix lemon juice and water in a bottle and spray the concoction into cracks and corners.
Essential Oils
As is with lemon, so is it with essential oils. Spiders can’t deal with the strong smell of essential oils so you can use them as repellents too. Peppermint oil is highly favored although you can also use tea tree oil, citrus oil or lavender oil. Take around five to ten drops of the essential oil in a spray bottle and add a little amount of washing liquid. Fill the bottle with warm water, shake the bottle to mix the ingredients thoroughly and then spray along the window and door frames, cracks and corners of the wall.
Cleanliness
Keeping your house and its immediate vicinity clean can help reducing the spider visits into your home. Spiders are usually found hiding in dark and cluttered places like piles of wood and leaves, boxes, grass clippings and empty containers. When cleaning your garden or yard, leave these piles of mess away from the house. Spiders and bugs, especially in winter, take refuge in these heaps of rubbish, so leaving the garden waste away from your walls would keep the insects from invading your home. Weed the garden regularly, especially the places near to your house walls and keep your garden equipment and kit in sealed containers rather than open boxes. Open boxes are an inviting place for spiders to weave webs.
Remove Webs
Even if you don’t see a spider anywhere, their webs are testimony to their presence. So if you see any spider webs inside your home or outside, sweep it clean. This discourages the spider from returning to that place. Clean high rise areas and corners of your house to keep it free from cobwebs. Even places that we normally overlook, like the insides of wardrobes and underneath shelf boards needs to be cleaned up regularly.
Seal cracks
Any cracks along your walls and windows are good hiding places for critters. Seal them and any open holes with silicone caulk. You can also install door sweeps to external door to prevent them from sneaking in.
Minimize Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor lighting attracts insects of all kinds at night. This will in turn attract spiders, which is a situation you want to avoid. Bright white light is appealing to insects so if you have to use outdoor lighting, make use of a bulb that offers a softer yellow glow. Try to minimize the use of outdoor lights and keep the source away from the house.
