New Technology That Turns Sewer Sludge into Clean Drinking Water

Sewer Sludge to Clean Drinking WaterWhile oil is one of the prime movers of the world economy, the scarcity of water is likely to be one of the biggest challenges in the coming years. A large number of people including those in developing nations still do not have access to safe drinking water.

The scarcity of pure drinking water is likely to be a thing of the past as Omni Processor Technology is working on a model that can deliver clean drinking water with sewer sludge as its ingredient. If that is not all, the byproduct of the machine is electricity which can be distributed to the nearest power grid. Here is a look at the new technology and its working mechanism.

Omni Processor Technology and its Operating Mechanism: The technology that turns sewer sludge into electricity and pure drinking water is made possible using a machine known as the Omni Processor.

In an Omni processor, sludge and sewer waste is fed into the machine using a conveyer belt. The sewer sludge and waste is then sent through a heat chamber which has a temperature of over 1000 degree Celsius. The heat burns away the foul smell and separates the vapor from the sewer sludge. The dry sludge is then passed through a hot furnace where steam is emitted out from it. The steam engine activates a power generator used for producing electricity. The electricity is used to run the machine while excess electricity is distributed or shared with the nearest power grid. The vapor on the other hand goes through a boiling process and turns into clean drinking water of high purity. The only waste material is ash which can be reused in the whole process cycle.

Janicki Bioenergy and Omni Processor: Janicki Bioenergy is the company which is the brain behind the Omni processor. Janicki Bioenergy builds machines of many different sizes that use this energy for sanitation, making clean water as well as producing electricity.

The Omni Processor currently has two models namely Omni Processor S100 built exclusively for Dakar Senegal and s200 which would be operational in the spring of 2016. S100 can produce up to 10,800 liters of clean drinking water per day, satisfying all United States FDA and WHO clean water requirements. S200 on the other hand will make use of the human and animal fecal sludge converting bio waste into clean drinking water.

Support and Backing from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation: The Omni Processor currently has a cost of about $1.5 million and the project is backed and promoted by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. It has plugged sensors and webcams which make it possible for the machine to be controlled by engineers of Janicki Bioenergy from any location.
