Pune Zilla Parishad to appoint committee to inspect quality of construction work
The quality of construction work in Pune would now be inspected by the committee set up by the Pune Zilla Parishad. The authority has asked the committee to conduct inspection drives at the construction sites and submit detailed reports to the administration.
Inspection would be carried out for on-going construction of roads and buildings which includes government offices, schools, aanganwadis, toilets and other structures. The quality of raw materials used for construction and the security measures adopted at the site would be closely analyzed by the committee members. A check on the necessary norms to be followed during construction would also be done by them.
Realty scene
Over the last few years, the city of Pune has seen a high-rise in the number of buildings constructed. Reports which revealed that most of them still remained unregistered were released earlier last month.
Illegal and unregistered constructions on land, using low quality raw materials are being reported in the city, in huge numbers. This not only causes huge revenue losses to the government but also proves to be a major threat to people as well as property.
Need for a committee
After the city witnessed collapse of several buildings in June, the civic authority denied approving proposals for new projects unless the same were registered beforehand. The need for a committee was considered after the release of this statistics that showed a high rise in the number of unregistered structures across the city.
Most of the builders and developers concentrate on completion of the project within the stipulated time-frame. This often leads to low quality construction and causes destruction of the built structures in a short span of time. According to the law, the authority can be held responsible for such an accident only if the building is approved and registered by the PMC. Unless the construction does not abide by the norms of construction and is not registered, the developer would be held responsible for any accidents related to the building.
The committee is expected to help raise the quality of work by restricting use of materials that are sub-standard and also timely inspect the method of construction. The same will also check on the illegal constructions being carried out across the city. The Zilla Parishad officials said that the scope of the committee would be extended on its observations and findings.
