Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna’s palatial bungalow Aashirwad is by far one of the most well known landmarks of Mumbai. Located in the upmarket Carter Road area in the suburb of Bandra, Aashirwad is the popular sea facing bungalow where Rajesh Khanna witnessed the peak of his popularity as well as his bad days. The superstar had a fond affection for his bungalow and expressed his desire to convert Aashirwad into a museum after his demise.

Aashirwad is located in the Carter Road in Bandra. Known as the queen of suburbs, Bandra is one of the most high profile residential localities in Mumbai. Facing the Arabian Sea, Aashirwad stands as a resonance of the high profile superstar epitomizing his lavish lifestyle. Conservative estimates by various real estate experts have put the current market value of Aashirwad at more than Rs 200 crore. The price of apartments in and around Bandra is approximately Rs 41,000 per sq. ft..

The present day Aashirwad was once believed to be a ghost infected Bungalow in the early 1960′s. Mesmerized by its location facing the Arabian Sea and the up market Carter Road area, the then superstar Rajendra Kumar bought the bungalow at a cheap price of Rs 60,000. Rajendra Kumar named the bungalow “Dimple” after his daughter and continued to live in it. The bungalow proved to be lucky for the superstar as almost every film he acted in was a jubilee hit. Later Rajendra Kumar sold the bungalow to the budding actor Rajesh Khanna as he moved to his bungalow in Pali Hill.
Rajesh Khanna renamed the bungalow ‘Aashirwad’ after getting married to the actor Dimple Kapadia. It is believed that Rajesh Khanna bought the bungalow for Rs 321.5 Lakhs. Hoards of female fans of Rajesh Khanna used to line up outside Aashirwad to catch a glimpse of the actor. Sadly when his glory days were long gone, the actor spent his time in a corner of the very same bungalow in isolation and remorse. Rajesh Khanna breathed his last in Aashirwad bungalow. As per his wish, the bungalow has been renamed Vardan Aashirwad by his wife Dimple and work is underway to open the bungalow as a museum for public viewing, in the near future.

After the death of the legendary actor, there have been a number of controversies and court cases regarding the ownership of various real estate assets of the superstar. The total value of Rajesh Khanna’s property is estimated to be close to Rs 600 crore. Apart from Aashirwad bungalow, Rajesh Khanna owned a flat in Versova, a bungalow in Mud Island, an upscale office in Linking Road apart from a few properties in Chennai including Aashirwad Theatre and shares in Filmalay in Andheri.
