Simple ways to make a small bedroom look bigger
If you are living in a big city, there is every possibility that the bedroom of your apartment is not as big as you had dreamt it to be. High property prices have made it very difficult for the middle class to acquire properties that come with larger built up area. Some prefer small houses as they think small is beautiful and it is less cumbersome to maintain a small house.
No matter whatever is your reason to choose to live in a small house, you do not have to be distressed that your bedroom is small and have apprehensions about it looking bad. You can make it look bigger by buying strategic furniture, space planning and choosing suitable lighting arrangement for the room.
Clear away all the clutter. Keep the room and all your stuff tidy. In a small space, everything counts. A lot of things will always make the room look cramped. Keep all those you think are not necessary out of sight in shelves or organised behind the door or under table skirts.
Do not keep furniture and accessories in the way of entry, instead keep them out in the open. When you move furniture out of the walkway, the space looks larger and no longer cramped. Always follow a simple rule – if you can see more of the floor, then the room looks bigger. Go for short furniture pieces like ottoman, armless open chair, low table, etc. Place tall, large accessories along the wall rather than out in the open.
Choose carefully what furniture you are going to buy. Measure how much wall space you have and go for furniture that will maximize the wall space. Rectilinear furniture suits small bedrooms better as they take up less space than curved furniture.
In a bedroom, usually a bed is the focal point, more so in case of a small bedroom. Do not keep a very large bed in a small bedroom, or it will make the room look cramped. Try to go for a smaller bed and consider scaling down the accessories accordingly. Table lamps and wall hangs should be proportionately scaled down as well.
Do not go for a dark colour for bedroom because it may make the small room look like a cave. Go for light colours such as icy blue or creamy white to make the room look bigger. Light coloured walls are more reflective, which would make the effects of natural light more amplified. Dark colours, on the other hand, absorb more light and make the room look smaller. If at all you want dark colour intermingled with light ones, then you can opt for dark coloured accessories like pillows, bed linens, draperies, etc.
Use a monochromatic colour scheme for your bedroom. Go for furniture which are of same colour as the wall. Different colours tend to break up the space in the viewer’s eye and furniture and accessories are easily blended with the room if they are of the same colour. Hence if your wall colour is light blue then put in draperies of blue colour, may be not the same tone but of the same colour family. It will reduce contrast to space.
If you want to keep a television in your bedroom, then go for one that is mounted on wall. It will reduce the space a television stand would take up. Same goes with other entertainment accessories as well. If you want to keep a stereo system in your bedroom, then avoid the clunky stereo units and go for one that connects to your mp3 instead.
Try to create a focal point in your bedroom. If you have a precious art work, then hang it above the bed on the wall. It will drag the eye from everything else and will keep it focused on the art work.
