South Delhi first to be made multi-modal transit hub
South Delhi would soon become the the multi-modal transit hub of the national capital, changing the commuting scenario of the region. As per the minutes of Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) prepared during its governing body meeting, a multi-modal integration would occur at all Phase III metro stations .
This project would provide interchange zones that would feature bus bays, pedestrian walkways, space for the movement of cycle rickshaws and drop-in and drop-off points for autorickshaws.
Implementation Strategy
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation would take up detailed designing/planning and retrofitting work of ‘Intense metro station influence zone’ of all Phase-III metro stations of Delhi , from their own fund as per the programme and project details given by UTTIPEC.
Metro stations like Chhatarpur and Arjan Garh would be developed in order to manage and facilitate seamless integration of public transport, with the metro, including bus and auto-rickshaws. Upon identifying and finalizing the suitable areas, they would be developed in an efficient manner, so that facilities like drop-off, parking etc., are provided in a smooth manner. Para-transit modes would be provided, in addition to a facilities for pedestrians. This would help in managing the high flow of traffic and in solving the issues of traffic around the metro stations.
According to the minutes of the meeting, consultants would be appointed by UTTIPEC, to prepare detailed station area plans for all of the Phase-III metro stations (64 in total) within a time frame of 3 months for the main corridor covering a 300 m stretch on either side of the metro station and the station area.
In a subsequent working group meeting under Chairmanship of E.M, it was discussed that the project should be fully funded by DDA but implemented by DMRC as they are the landowning agency. Necessary funding for the detailed design and construction would be hence provided by the Delhi Development Authority, in order to expedite the implementation of the project.
Commuters in the national capital face a lot of hassle while shuttling to and from different parts of the city. Shifting from one mode of transportation to another triggers chaos around the metro stations, and adversely affects the traffic around the stations. Developing all the 64 upcoming metro stations in Phase III as multi-modal transit hubs, would help in improving the situation considerably and help in a smooth flow of traffic.
Real estate sector around the regions of the metro stations would be highly benefited with the project, especially the under-developed regions of NCR. Plot and property prices would soar high here, with these areas enjoying a good connectivity with the national capital and other regions of NCR.
