coolerSummer is month with extreme heat and longest day in a year. You can make your home cool for this summer and maintain your home foreseeing monsoon. Summer is good time for maintenance of electrical appliances and wirings. Here are some tips for caring your home best in this summer.

Making indoors comfortable

In summer room temperature rises and utility bills also increase when you are cooling your home with appliances like cooler, fan and Air conditioner. The heat of a room rise mainly due to use of electronic devices and lightings. You can make your control room temperature and make home cool in this summer. Here are some tips for you to make your home cool.

Open windows when atmosphere is cool: In summer days are hot and night are cool. Best utilize this for cooling your home. Close the window where your room get direct sunlight and keep the windows open from evening to dawn. Keep blinds and draperies closed. This helps to keep your room cool and blow out hot air from your room.

Turn off lights: In summer, room temperature rise due to use of home appliances and lighting. For lighting use compact fluorescent lamp, they provide brighter light and less heat in room. It consumes less energy. Turn off lights in days and use natural lights which indirectly enter your home.

Cooking: Cooking generates heat and raises your room temperature. Avoid cooking when the temperature is hot. If you need to cook, use your range fan to vent the hot air out. It is better to cook food in night or in early morning.

Heat generating appliances: Use your air conditioner wisely and try to minimize the use of air condition. Remember to shade your air conditioner from direct sunlight. Turn off your air conditioner when you leave the room. It is better to use air conditioner for controlling room temperature than using them to cool. Air conditioner burns carbon which increases heat in room and its surrounding. Turn off TV than keeping them in standby mode. Limit the usage of appliance that generates heat.

Reduce indoor humidity: Avoid indoor humidity as they make you feel your room air warm. Avoid washing clothes, showering and cooking in mid-day. Turn on ventilation fan when to extract warm air.

Summer Maintenance

Summer is best time for renovation works and repair equipments. It is better to plan now to overcome leakage or wiring problem than repairing them in monsoon. Here are some tips for maintaining your home in this summer.

Repair the cracks: Whether cracks are small or large, they need to be repaired in time else it will become a major problem in monsoon when water enters the crack and cause more cracking.

Clean the gutter: Cleaning and maintaining gutter helps to keep your home in good shape. Remove dry leaves and debris which can block flow of water. Check the downspouts are not blocked you can use small plumber’s snake to clear block. If you are not able to clean or repair gutter, seek professionals to get them done.

Repair Wiring: Get electrical works get done before monsoon. Replace damage electrical cords or switch board. Keep track on water seepage into electrical room. Hire a professional to inspect wirings and appliances. Get them repaired immediately.

Check doors and windows: Check the operation of all your windows and doors are in proper condition. Check the locks of door and windows and if required get one from your local hardware store. It is better to have your door or windows deadbolt locks.

Check for water leaks: Know where water shut off valves for your house locates and check whether it is operational. Turn off faucets to check whether there is any hidden leakage in your home. Check at regular interval under the sink in kitchen to see whether the hosepipe is secure and is not leaking.

Maintain roof: Clear dry leaves and debris in regular interval. Walk on roof only for necessary repairs or inspection. This helps to limit wear and tear on your roof. Avoid excessive shade or tress rubbing against your roof. Keep trees trim to avoid rubbing against roof or falling dry leaves on your roof or gutter. Repair damage or deteriorate if any. Provide slop for your roof than allowing water to pool on roof of your home.

Apartment Patio: Keep apartment patio clean and organized. You can choose a small garden and good theme for making your patio attractive. Keep all things improper place and in order. You can install compact florescent lightings or timer lighting for your patio. Lightings need to be enough bright for safety and security.
