Tips for a perfect Indoor Gardening

Those lovely gardens in front of your house are out of question for today’s city dwellers. But as we all love to be in close association in nature, indoor gardening is a perfect solution. Indoor gardens help to bring in the warmth and greenness of nature and some fresh air inside your apartments. Even if you live in villas with sufficient spaces for small outdoor gardens, indoor gardens bring in a beauty inside your rooms.

Things to note before starting

Choosing the right plants for the interiors is really important. Right plants mean, plants that can grow in a medium or less sunlight, growth within room temperature and that has a beautifying effect.
Plants with flowers often require more sunlight. So if you are choosing flowering plants it is ideal to place them in the open balconies.
Avoid keeping pots inside the room where there is no means of day light. Indoor plants require only 1-2 hours sunlight; so ideally keep plant pots close to windows or places in day light is falling in
If your plant is positioned in a place where it is not getting sufficient sunlight, take it out to the balcony for some time every day.
While purchasing indoor plants ensure that they are free from pests
Before purchasing indoor plants, enquire with the gardener about the care tips required for the plant
The leaves of some good looking indoor plants have some poisonous effect. So if you have small children or pets at home avoid such plants
Avoid thorny plants from interiors. It not only harms small children and pets, but also get things stuck on them or damage your curtains.

How to start

You can either purchase plants from nursery or buy seeds from nurseries, super markets or stores. But if you are buying seeds, do check if they are out dated. Maneuvers and even mild pesticides are not recommended for interiors as they can cause bad odours and health effects like allergies. Container gardens are ideal for homes, but the size and shape of the containers have to be chosen according to the room size and ambiance.

Pots can be re painted so as to suit your interiors. Shapes of pots / containers can be round, square or fancy depending upon your imagination and ambiance. Natural pot colours are also appealing as they have an earthy feel. It is recommended to but light weight containers for easy movement inside the rooms.

Another appealing and aesthetic way of growing indoor plants is wall / roof hanging pots. There are many fancy pots available now which will enhance the looks of your interiors and balconies. Wall hanging pots also save space inside. If you could nt find good patterns of pots in your near by nursery, there are options available online for purchasing cute and unique pots.

Popular Indoor Plants

Some popular indoor plants are Chinese Ever Green, Tropical Combo Bonsai, Amaryllis, Ponytail Palms etc. There are a variety of palms to choose from for interiors.
