Prevention is better than cure. When you consider decorating your apartment or makeover of your apartment balcony, first and important thing you need to consider is the safety of your family members. Elderly person and kids must be given special care when they are moving in or around balcony. Here are some safety tips for you and your family members.

  • Clutter free balcony: Staircases have provided both adults and children with bumps, bruises, broken bones and other injuries. Keep stairs clear of clutter that may pose a tripping hazard. Ensure you balcony is clutter free and your family members can move in or around balcony freely. Clutter free balcony will help your elderly family members to use balcony for reading or spend their evening enjoying view from balcony.
  • Furniture arrangement: Don’t keep furniture or other climbing hazards near windows or on balconies and decks. A child could climb on the furniture and fall over the balcony. Ensure your kids are supervised when they are playing in balcony.
  • Balcony railings: The design and height of balcony vary from apartment to apartment or depending on the location and country. For safety, balcony railings should be 42 inches high, have no more than 4 inches of space between each railing, and children should not be able to climb over. Install and maintain window and door safety devices.
  • Safety Rules: Children aged one to four are the group at highest risk of suffering a fall from a window or balcony. Setting firm rules with regard to balcony safety, is protection for everybody and anybody who sits out on an upper floor balcony.

Do not underestimate, young children learn quickly to unlock door. Children may be able to unlock doors and windows to gain access to dangerous areas.
