Tips to build a loft bed in your child’s room
If your child is whining about the small space in his/her room or wants to have large space to sleep then, one of the best ways to make the room spacious and create a unique sleeping space for your child is build a loft/bunk bed for your child. Having a loft bed is considered one of the most cosy additions to a bedroom. Building a loft is quite easy and here are few tips;
Get appropriate lumber:
Get the highest quality lumber. Ensure that the wood is strong enough to stand the weight and pressure.
Preparing the wood:
To start with, sand all the faces of the wood until there won’t be any splinters or snags. Paint or stain all the faces of the wood with one coat. Allow it to dry.
The appropriate measurements:
Set all the four beams in a rectangular shape with 2 inch x 6 inch x 8 feet boards. Cut them to size and down to 78 inches long. Further, take the third lumber and cut it into two pieces measuring thirty-seven inches. There will be four pieces together. Once the lumber is cut in to proper sizes, make a box out of the four pieces measuring 40 inches by 78 inches. Keep the longer boards on the outside of the shorter boards. To fasten them together, you should use 3 inch drywall screws for the corner. Cut the plywood to fit into the base of the box and secure them with screws. Place them evenly and decide about how tall the bed should be off the ground. The height of the ceiling should also be considered.
The placing:
The bed should be placed depending on the height of the ceiling. Both the outside and the inside boxes should be fastened with screws. A measurement to attach the mattress box to the posts should be marked. Once that is done, place two posts on the ground and keep them apart carefully. Drill holes on the mattress box through the posts and fasten them. There should be two bolts fastened in each corner. The same will be followed for all the four legs. You can support a loft bed either by fastening them to the wall, by having posts or by mounting it on top of a shelf. The rest of the planks can be used to create stairs for the bed.
Accessories:
Once the bed is made, choose an appropriate mattress and place it. The loft bed can be decorated with pictures, or colourful papers and sheets. Do not forget to make stairs to climb on the loft bed. Avoid chemical based accessories for your child’s use.
