Tips to hide a crooked ceiling in your apartment
Are you worried about the crooked ceiling in your living room and are thinking of ways to make it look presentable? Well, there are several guidelines in the interior decorating principles which deal with unwanted and unattractive architectural elements. However, having a crooked ceiling in your apartment can actually spoil the room features and the simplest way to get rid of it is to hide it. Here are some ideas;
Wall colour:
To hide a defective area, you should choose a dark colour which matches your decor scheme and the rest of the walls. The same colour on the walls will create a lack of contrast resulting in the camouflage of the ceiling. Also having a dark colour on both the walls and the ceiling will increase the perceived height of the ceiling and will make the wall look further away. The room naturally appears larger and makes the crooked lines of the ceiling less prominent.
Paint finishes:
To make your walls look smooth, make use of an eggshell or a flat paint finish as these finishes tend to reflect lesser light when compared to the glossy ones. This eventually reduces the shadow created by the crooked ceiling.
Lighting:
If you have too many lights in and around the crooked ceiling like the hanging lamps, pot lamps or flat fixtures, remove them away as they make the crooked ceiling more prominent. Avoid having straight lines from the visual plane of the ceiling. If the lights or the chandeliers in the room are focusing towards the ceiling, direct them away to a focal point which catches a viewer’s attention like a wall art, a table’s cape or a reading chair.
Window curtains:
To reduce the visual contrast of the ceiling, install window coverings of the same colour and avoid mounting the drapes’ top edge less than 12 to 14 inches from the ceiling. It is very important that the rod and the curtains match the dark colour of the ceiling to hide the ceiling.
Wall art/embellishments:
If you have wall arts or other decorative items, ensure that they are of the same color as the ceiling and the wall. It is advisable that you do not have any sort of wall hangings around the crooked ceiling.
